Weekly Club Update - Friday 16th June

16 Jun 2023

IT'S BEEN A QUIET WEEK WITH JUST three games for Glenmore since the last update. There were narrow wins for the Royals and Taverners in the Weeknight league, while the Knights lost a good game against Panthers in the 35 overs comp.

The Glenmore Royals took on Shaheen Warriors a week ago and showed a lot discipline and determination to repeatedly fight back. Warriors got off to a flyer with their opening bat smacking 31 from just 18 balls. Once he left the scene the Royals bowlers got into their groove and put the squeeze on nicely. The spin twins Sajid Hasan (3 for 9 from 4 overs) and David Hazell (2-16) did most of the damage and really slowed the scoring rate. Emaad Hasan also chipped in with a key wicket as Shaheen were kept to just 110-8 from their 20 overs.

The Royals reply wasn't the most dominant, with a numbers of batters making starts but not kicking on. A pair of ducks for Sajid and Cam Whalen in the middle of the innings put some pressure on the lower order, but a calm 23 from Hazell helped settle the nerves. The experienced heads of Arvind Azariah (13) and skipper Theunis van der Linde (15*) eventually knocked off the runs to give Royals a well fought victory.

THE TAVERNERS ALSO MADE HARD WORK of their run chase when they took on JCC on Monday evening. Perfect conditions at Inland and a fast outfield meant the Tavs batters were confident of chasing down JCC's target of 137 relatively easily. However, a string of poor shots and three ducks meant it was a much tighter game than it should have been. Things got off to the worst possible start when Chris Austin went for a second ball duck, but a fluent partnership between Manish Angl and Terry McGrath got things back on track. Terry in particular was looking at his very best, playing a number of sumptuous drives, until he attempted an audacious reverse sweep and was gone for 22. Manish (22) and Matt Chilvers (21) continued to knock it around smartly to keep the scoring rate on track. The run rate took a significant jump when Dan Paul was in the middle. The aggressive leftie helped himself to 32* from just 13 balls. However, three quick wickets fell to the slow, loopy fare offered up by Vipul Panchal, including first ballers for Amith Herath and Chris Williams. That left things looking rather precarious with Alex Storey (19*) and Tarun Jain (8*) at the crease, but a few boundaries and some sharp running meant they put on 21 and got the Tavs over the line.

The JCC innings had got off to a rapid start as they smashed their way to 52 from 4 overs. At the half way stage in the innings they were sitting pretty on 91. It took some excellent bowling from namesakes Dan Paul (3-29) and Terrell Dhanpaul (1-26) to wrestle the initiative back for the Tavs. Rikki Panther (3-10) and TJ (1-8) then wrapped up the innings in quick time to keep the score down to far fewer than it had seemed likely.

Yet more Man of the Match beers for Dan Paul.

LAST SEASON A NUMBER OF THE PANTHERS players were wearing the blue of Glenmore, so it was something of a grudge match when they locked horns with the Knights at the weekend. Panthers batted first and put together a consistent effort with the bat to post 168-5, with all their line up making it to double figures. For the Knights Gurvinder Singh Gill was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 2 for 10 from 4 overs.

The Knights run chase didn't get off to the best of starts as they stumbled to 35-3 from 8 overs. But a useful partnership of 74 between David Hazell and Saad Khan seemed to be taking the boys to a winning position. Saad was looking at his dangerous best and moved serenely past 50, but when both set batsmen fell in quick succession the wheels started to fall off. Nobody in the bottom order was able to get in as wickets fell with regularity. In the end the chase fell 33 runs short to give Panthers the bragging rights.
