Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves v Predators on Sun 21 Aug 2016 at 12pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Lost 64 runs
Match report
An unlikely, heroic last wicket partnership of 61 couldn't disguise what was a chastening defeat for the Glenmore 1st XI on Sunday. Predators maintained their unbeaten season with a strong, disciplined performance that proved too much for the boys in blue.
When Suki Ghotra walked out to bat at number 11 the game looked done and dusted. Another sub-par batting performance from Glenmore left them in tatters at 60-9. However, Suki and Jaideep Singh produced a truly remarkable partnership to more than double the total. For a long time Suki has been telling his teammates the virtues of his batsmanship, but sadly with little evidence to back it up. But, Sunday was his day as he demonstrated a skill level way above that of those who'd been and gone earlier in the innings. Two fours and two sixes, including a towering blow into the trees off K.Abbas (who was the chief architect in Glenmore's demise with 5 for 25), raised a few eyebrows and more than a few cheers! It was a terrific innings from Suki (29*), demonstrating good judgement, defense and plenty of attacking flair.
At the other end Jai (39) once again showed his excellent temperament and ability, picking up plenty of 1s and 2s, as well as the occasional boundary. Together the pair did a wonderful job to take Glenmore to 121. If only the top order had been able to play with the same quality.
It was always going to be hard work chasing down 186 at Riley against a decent attack, but too many of Glenmore's batsmen were guilty of panicking in the face of the challenge. Plenty were out looking to hit the ball hard and long, when a little more patience may well have been the better option.
But, nothing should be taken away from Predators performance, which was extremely impressive in it's maturity and professionalism. They had been in a lot of trouble early in their innings as once again the Glenmore bowlers impressed with the ball. Early wickets from Shariq Akhlaq and Manjinder Sandhu had reduced Preds to 40-5, and the game was firmly in Glenmore's hands. But, despite the continued good work of Suki, Tejas Chitre and Jai they were unable to break the back of the Preds long batting line up. Sattar (29), K Abbas (42) and Y Abbas (47) all batted fantastically well to change the tide. Each batted in a very calm manner, happy to leave and defend as necessary, but also confident enough to go on the attack when the ball was in their zone. It was one of the best batting efforts we've seen for a long time.
Credit must also go to the Glenmore bowlers, who stuck to their task very well throughout in unusually hot conditions. There were also some excellent catches taken, particularly from Jaideep (diving low at mid wicket) and Manjnder (running forward and diving with one hand at mid-off). Unfortunately, as the innings wore in there were a few costly mistakes in the field as the Preds batting heaped the pressure on the Glenmore team.
So, after 9 games Glenmore sit in fourth position but with everything still to play for as they bid to make the play-offs.
