Weekly Club Update - Friday 9th June

09 Jun 2023

LET'S START THINGS OFF WITH A REMINDER. We have two Summer social events happening in July and we need people to sign up for them as soon as possible. As things stand we haven't had enough sign up for us to go ahead, so please do get in touch if you wish to attend. Our Lawn Bowls day is on Saturday July 15th. Families and friends are welcome to join as we head to Bow Valley Lawn Bowling club for an afternoon in the sunshine. Cost is $20 per person.

On July 29th we have our annual Golf Day fundraiser. This year we play at McKenzie Meadows and the cost is $130. Again, feel free to invite friends and family to take part too.

To sign up just send the entry fee to glenmorecc@gmail.com.

LAST FRIDAY WE ENJOYED A VIDEO and photo shoot at Riley Park to help out our new friends at Team Town Sports. They are opening two new sports stores in Calgary this Summer and will be stocking cricket equipment. The footage they got of us will be used in stores and on their website. A big thank you to all the guys who showed up and took part in the shoot; Rich Harvey, Terrell Dhanpaul, David Hazell, Shaun Rheeder, Cam Whalen, Rikki Panther, Dan Paul, Ameer Hamza, Suki Ghotra, Jaideep Singh, Sam Yadav and Raman Dhillon.

FOLLOWING THE SHOOT WE HAD A GLENMORE vs Glenmore game on the hallowed turf of Riley. It was the Royals against the Taverners with the Pasternak Trophy up for grabs. The Tavs won the game thanks to a superb all round display. A number of batters found form (Chris Austin 27, Jason Bell 30*, Terry McGrath 30*, Dan Paul 33*, Matt Chilvers 22*) to post a big score of 169-2 from 20 overs. Sadly for the Royals their top order were unable to fire as the Tavs reduced them to 22-4 in 4 overs. All the Taverners attack performed well with Terrell (3-10) and Dan (5-23) the pick of the bowlers.

As always, the game was played in terrific spirit and was a lot of fun. It was also great to see so many family and friends in attendance, making for a lovely Summer evening atmosphere. Special thanks to Quinton North who ran the BBQ for us and did a brilliant job.

THE ROYALS CAME INTO THE GAME off the back of a truly great win the previous week. Up against top-of-the-table Panthers they produced perhaps their greatest ever performance to win by 6 wickets with 1 over remaining. It was an amazing all round display with everyone contributing. Panthers had threatened to post an enormous total with opener Qumber Zaidi smashing 31 from just 15 balls. But, once he retired the Royals bowlers put the squeeze on and managed to keep chipping away with wickets at pivotal moments. Emaad Hasan picked up 2-29 and Cam Whalen 1-20, but it was David Hazell who did the most damage, finishing with 4 for 26 with his off spin.

Chasing 144 against an experienced Panthers team was always going to be challenging but the run chase went almost perfectly. Usama Saeed went early but an attacking partnership of 47 between Wasim Naqshbandi (28 from 23) and Gurvinder Ahuja (30* from 15) got the run rate going to put the pressure on the bowlers. Weeknight cricket requires a number of batters to put their hand up and contribute, and fortunately for the Royals they found two able middle order batters to come in and pick up where Wasim and Gurvinder had left off. Cam and David batted beautifully to maintain the run rate and take a big chunk out of the target. Both made 32 not out in quick time, leaving just a handful of runs for Sajid Hasan and Varun Talwar to tick off to secure a famous victory.

IT'S BEEN A FRUSTRATING FEW WEEKS for the Glenmore Braves as they have experienced three narrow defeats. An 11 run loss to Calgary Eagles was followed by a 4 wicket defeat against Runriders Alpha in the T20 league. A 13 run loss to Kings XI 2 on Sunday in the 35 over league was a particularly disappointing one as the game was certainly there to be won. The Braves bowlers did brilliantly to keep Kings to just 176-9. Tejas Chitre, who has become an incredibly consistent bowler in recent seasons, was the pick of the attack taking 3-14 from his 7 overs. A solid start to the run chase (36 put on for the first wicket), and then a good partnership between Aniket Desai (46) and Venky Taluri (37) got the Braves in an excellent position at 116-2. However, the middle order and tail were unable to fire leaving the team 13 runs short.

THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION when the Knights played CCA 2 a few weeks ago. A brief downpour meant the final two overs of the match weren't bowled and Duckworth/Lewis was employed to figure out the result. The initial outcome seemed to fall in favour of the CCA, but upon subsequent investigation the result was overturned to give the Knights a 1 run win. Once again it had been Saad Khan (53 from 39 balls) and Adil Amin (29 from 28) who did the heavy lifting with the bat, while Divyesh Khule was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-15.

Things were a little more straight forward when the Knights played Predators last week and wrapped up a comfortable 53 run victory to put them top of the Div 2 T20 table having won 4 out of 4. Ahsan Javaid was at his destructive best at the top of the order, blazing 10 fours on his way to 69 from 45 deliveries. Adil also got to fifty, helping himself to 51 from 39. 171-8 from 20 overs was a great effort and Predators never looked likely to threaten the total. Particularly as the Knights bowlers had their tractor beams zeroed in on the stumps, seven times cleaning up the batsmen! Incredibly all 7 bowlers used by Ameer Hamza picked up a wicket with Humza Javed the most successful (3-20).

The Glenmore Knights, top of the table.

THE GLENMORE BLUES HAVE been in good form over the past few weeks, racking up impressive wins against SAIT (by 70s runs) and Rockies XI (by 7 wickets). In both games the bowlers have performed fantastically well with SAIT getting bowled out for just 66 and Rockies all out for 87. Kyle Salzmann has been at his bets with the new ball, taking 6 wickets in the two games including 4-18 against SAIT. Karanpreet Singh has also been enjoying himself, pick up 3fers in both games with his impressive leg spin. Blues have three bowlers (Kyle, Karanpreet and Hari Venkat) in the top five wicket takers in the Weeknight league so far. Daksh Bhatt has been Mr Consistent with the bat this season, and he made 31* and 20* in the two most recent wins, while Reece Trevillion, Debo Sen, Ahad Bhaidani and Kyle have all made valuable contributions too. Keep up the good work Blues.
