AS I'VE DONE MANY TIMES in my cricket career, I've dropped the ball! It's been almost three weeks since I sent out one of these weekly update emails. My apologies. This is particularly poor form considering there have been a few notable weekends for the club.
Sadly our 2nd XI fell at the final hurdle in their bid to win the Division 3 T20 championship two weeks ago. After finishing the league season top of the table, and then demolishing Crescent Stars in the semi-final, they narrowly missed out on glory in the final. Crescent Stars were again the opposition, and they set a challenging target of 153. Our run chase got off to a shaky start with our powerful top order having a rare off day. With the score at 39-4 after 9 overs we faced an uphill battle, but the depth and ability of the batting line up meant we stayed in the hunt. The second half of the innings was all Glenmore with Saad Khan (44 off 45), Nabeel Ayubi (33 off 17) and Muhammad Hayat (27 off 8) showing their batting prowess to take the game long. Unfortunately Crescent Stars were always able to take an important wicket just as it seemed we were getting ahead in the game. The pivotal moment came when Saad was controversially caught on the boundary edge, or perhaps a little over the edge.
In the end the 2nds fell 10 runs short and were left feeling the pain of a hard defeat. But, the whole squad should feel incredibly proud of their achievements this Summer. They performed consistently well throughout the season and played with tremendous skill and spirit.
IT WOULD BE REMISS NOT TO mention a very special innings played in the semi-final game against Crescent Stars. Many of us have found run scoring at Riley Park to be a difficult task, but Adil Amin had no such trouble as he produced a truly remarkable knock in a vital fixture. Adil destroyed the bowling attack, smoking 13 sixes on his way to 123 off 56 balls! Surely the grand old ground has never seen hitting quite like it before. Saad Khan (57 off 29) and Ahsan Javaid (35 off 21) also had some fun, but this was Adil's day.
The 2nds ended up winning by 103 runs thanks to another excellent all round bowling display. There were two wickets apiece for Dan Paul, Ameer Hamza and Muhammad Hayat, while Shoaid Khan and Shadman Sakib both chipped in with one wicket.
Adil picks up his well deserved Man of the Match award.
THE ANNUAL CLUB GOLF DAY took place on September 3rd at Heatherglen. We had a perfect day for the event and 20 members, old and new, taking part. As always, it was a great day with everyone having lots of fun. Congratulations to Terry, Rikki, Marius and Darren for winning the competition, to everyone who picked up a prize on the prize holes or in the raffle. We sincerely appreciate everyone taking part, and helping us raise $400 for the club.
Massive thanks must also go to all the businesses who donated prizes; Born Brewing Co, Golfuture, all the breweries (Wild Rose, Zero Issue, Legend Seven, SunnyCider, Cold Garden, New Level), Two Rivers distillery, Kananaskis Golf Course and our generous members Ryan Jenkinson and Rikki Panther. Thanks to one and all.
Please check out the club website for more photos from the day.
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 1ST XI for a welcome comprehensive win last weekend against old rivals Knight Riders. It has been a tough season for the 1sts but they enjoyed a fun, comfortable afternoon at Westwinds. Lakha Singh (3-15 off 7 overs) set things up with the new ball, taking the first three wickets to fall before 50 was on the board. It was then over to Gautam Verma (3-30 off 10) to keep up the good work, before Dan Paul sealed the deal with an amazing spell of 3.4-1-4-4! Knight Riders all out for 92, thank you very much!
As has often been the case this season, Anjan Singh was the main man with the bat for the 1st XI. The skipper made a calm, patient 40 not out to ensure there were no issues knocking off the total. Too many times this Summer Anjan has been left doing the hard work by himself, but he found a willing ally in Manav Attri (28) at the top of the order on this occasion, with the pair putting on 84 for the first wicket. That opening partnership made sure the boys enjoyed some winning beer after the game.
BY NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED AN INVITE to our annual Awards Gala. This is our biggest social event of the year, allowing all the club to get together to celebrate our achievements on and off the field. As always, you are welcome to bring family along. We appreciate cricket is a time consuming sport so this is a good chance to thank our family for allowing us time away to play the sport we love. The gala is on Saturday 15th October starting at 5pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Please RSVP to the invitation as soon as possible, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Here is a link to the invitation for you to respond to.
WE HAVE TWO MORE DATES FOR YOUR DIARY. On Wednesday 26th October it is our Annual General Meeting. As we always say, this is a very important meeting, allowing us to discuss the past 12 months and to look ahead for the next year and beyond. We encourage as many members to attend as possible, and to share their thoughts, opinions, etc. So, do please make a note of that.
And, on Saturday 12th November we will have our first in person Quiz Night since 2019! We will be back at Joyce on 4th for an evening of trivia and lots of laughs. As ever, it will be teams of 4 so put it in your diary and start working on which of your teammates, family and friends are the smartest and invite them along.
