Glenmore Cricket Club Lost By 116 runs

Match report Déjà vu is a weird animal but when it comes in loving gusts of adrenalin filled victory and the sweet, sweet, smell of success it can be a magical moment. Alas it also comes in the night slinking and sliding amongst your hopefully forgotten memories bringing them painfully back into focus.
So it was with our outing against Kanata Panthers on Sunday.
Blessed with probably the best early May weather that God himself could offer us we promptly lost the toss and the chance of batting first as Panthers leapt at the opportunity.
Parr got things off to a brisk start trapping Ahmed plumb in front with a sandshoe crushing yorker. Nasir started on his way with typical fashion lofting anything in the zone to leg with mishits coming often but always somehow agonizingly missing the stumps or looping just out of reach of fielders. Then that sultry femme fatal Déjà vu made an appearance as we began to drop catches. Nasir just seems to have more luck than any other batsman Glenmore faces as balls popped up and hit the turf.
Glenmore went to the break with only one wicket in the bank and a lot of work to do with Nasir 70+ and S. Khan looking very dangerous.
Thankfully straight after the break Sherjan got the edge of Nasir’s bat – twice. The first time a low catch was grassed by Bray but the second held smack in the middle of the chest sent Nasir from the field. Reinhardt Chipped in with a quick wicket and Glenmore were right back in the game. Asad came on for a short spell and picked up a the valuable wicket of Abid and Bobby found the edge of Saboor’s bat that then went onto his pad and looped to a diving Trevor who completed the catch.
At 6 down Glenmore could have potentially rolled through Panthers to chase a par score of around 250. Unfortunately the Panthers middle order had other plans. Malik and Mannan put on 100 runs for the 7th wicket. The dropped catch count was now up to 8 and although Glenmore didn’t suffer the 500+ run total of last season it was indeed looking a decidedly difficult target.
Ruwan put in a last burst and got a couple of wickets in succession giving him a hat-trick opportunity. Firstly he found the edge of Malik’s bat ending his great knock of 60 and then he cleaned up Zahid with a beauty. Safi back in Panthers colors negotiated the danger ball then went onto hit a quick fire 20 with last bat Sohail to push the total to 324. Despite the knees up energy Glenmore showed throughout the game the umpires penalized Glenmore 1 over for not completing the overs in the time allowed this made the chase 331 to win.
Bray and Thushantha could not secure one of their solid openings on this occasion with Ruwan out for 10 picking out mid-off after only a couple of boundaries. Bray and Sherjan looked to consolidate until Bray got a leading edge which looped to close mid-wicket for 13. Both wickets fell to Zahid who was finding a good line and extra bounce.
Sherjan looked the goods again with his fluent shot making and patient batting all he needed was a partner to stay with him. George unfortunately was given out strangled down the leg side off his thigh pad. Joubert started to play some lovely sweep shots and everyone was shocked when he was bowled by Nasir Malik. Elevated in the order Ryan strode to the crease full of confidence and feeling completely in form and ready to take on the world. Déjà vu again, but this time shades of the fantastic Sherjan/ Storey partnership from the corresponding game last season. This partnership was not quite as large but 114 runs in good time kept Glenmore in the hunt before Ryan was caught off the bowling of Saboor for 54 an innings of composure and aggression his first half ton for the club.
Nathan was elevated in the order with only one mission to smash some quick runs. 1 blazoned boundary was followed by an even better shot that was snapped up inches from the turf on the mid-on boundary to leave him marching off for 4. Sherjan was watching all of the proceedings while increasing the run scoring and getting tantalizingly close to another ton before he was bowled by Nasir Malik for a fantastic 92. Trev, Bobby and Asad had too much to do, Trev out for 1, Asad for a first ball yorker and Bobby finishing on 1 not out.
There are still lots of positives again from this match, with some periods of excellent bowling and some great batting performances. Catching was our demise on this occasion and as we know against a lot of the teams on Inland small who play a swing for the fence style of cricket taking the chances that come is vital.
