1st XI Blow Away Cavaliers at Westwinds

04 May 2015

Glenmore made it two wins out of two with a thumping victory on Saturday against old foes Cavaliers. A fantastic performance with the ball in a howling wind was followed up with a quick-fire masterclass from Mark Turner as the score was knocked off in no time.

Cavaliers won the toss and batted first, but were soon one wicket down thanks to a sensational piece of cricket. Bowling with the wind at his back, Manjinder produced a beautiful outswinger to the left-handed Khawaja. The ball took the edge of the bat and flew rapidly high into the slip cordon. Mark Turner at second slip threw his big right hand up and took an absolute screamer! Manji was once again right on the money in his opening spell and was unfortunate not to have more success. He had a very good lbw shout turned down, and then Storey dropped a clanger behind the stumps.

At the other end Suki Ghotra performed admirably bowling into the wind. He maintained a full, probing length and was rewarded with two excellent wickets. He had Javed lbw with one that straightened from middle stump, and then had Sidhu caught at mid-wicket.

Glenmore's high standards with the ball were very impressive, and nothing changed once Iqbal Sandhu and Reinhardt Malan were introduced into the attack. In fact they put the squeeze on even more. Both guys hit a fantastic line and length, giving absolutely nothing away. Iqbal struck twice in his seven overs, each time the umpires' finger going up on lbw appeals. The first removed the Cavaliers opener for 30, and the second was a searing yorker to Addala which may have gone under the stumps.

Reinhardt was tremendous as he managed to bowl ten consecutive overs into the increasingly strong wind, and thoroughly deserved his wicket. He kept a lid firmly on the Cavs scoring, as did Ruwan Thushantha who was excellent in his five overs. Glenmore's first five bowlers had all done superbly well, but it was left to Ryan Jenkinson to wrap things up. The bustling left armer took three quick wickets. Twice he knocked over middle stump, but the most memorable of his wickets was when he found the edge of Liaqat's bat and Storey took a diving, one-handed catch to his right.

In tough conditions it was a great all round bowling display. If the seamers continue to perform to the same level all Summer Glenmore should be in good shape.

Cavaliers were all out for 112, and after a ten minute break the players were back out in the middle. By this stage the wind had picked up to gale force, and bowling had become even harder. Of course, bowling to an in-form Mark Turner is never much fun at the best of times, and the tall Kiwi continued where he left off last week. He made a fantastic 79 not out from just 45 deliveries. In amongst his many boundaries were two or three absolutely top class shots. A few serene cover drives he just leaned into raced to the fence, and there was a back foot drive which oozed class. The only time Turner looked in any trouble was when his bat snapped in half! At the other end Storey kept his head down to grind out a far from fluent 20 not out. Glenmore's victory was never in doubt and Turner wrapped it up with yet another big shot down the ground for four. All done and dusted in just 13.5 overs, thank you very much. Everybody thoroughly relieved to get out of the cold.

Tougher tests await Glenmore's 1st XI but for now they can enjoy their back-to-back wins and take great pride in two excellent performances.
