Match Report: Glenmore T20 vs United Warriors, July 20th

22 Jul 2013

Glenmore made it back-to-back wins with a comfortable victory at Riley Park on Saturday. It was a beautiful sunny day and Glenmore produced an accomplished all-round display to take the 6 points.

Pasha won the toss and elected to field first. United Warriors had struggled in the T20 league for the first few weeks of the season and it wasn't long before they were under the cosh again. Pasha opened the bowling and immediately found an impeccable line of attack. With batsmen looking to play shots from ball one, a good line and length is often enough to do the trick and so it proved as Pasha picked up the first three wickets to fall. Qamar was out caught behind, Malik was taken by Hardeep at short third man and Munawar was smartly caught by Sandeep.

With three early wickets Glenmore were immediately on the front foot and looking for further breakthroughs. An opportunity came when the ball was smashed into the clear blue sky. Ajay Pawar looked to have got under it but the ball fell from his grasp and hit the deck. In attempting the catch Ajay split his fingers and had to depart for the hospital to get stitches.

The middle order of Warriors dug in relatively well with Bilal making 23, Faisal 14 and Imtiaz 25. Although these batsmen all made it to double figures none were able to really wrestle the initiative and take the game away from Glenmore. All the bowlers were wonderfully consistent and made scoring difficult. Bobby Gajendra, playing his first T20 of the season, was wonderfully economical during his opening burst. Nadeem found his usual probing length and had some reward when Imtiaz nicked off to Storey behind the stumps.

Although the seamers had done extremely well, it was the spinners who really knocked the stuffing out of the Warriors batting order. Sandeep and Waseem were once again on the money and always looked like taking wickets. Had the Glenmore fielders been a little more ruthless the spin twins would have had significantly better figures. As it was, Sandeep had to settle for 1-20 (caught by Iqbal at cow corner) and Waseem 2-14.

A few run outs helped the cause and it was left to Bobby (4-0-14-1) to return to finish the innings. The final total, a below par 115 all out.

Alex Storey was reunited with Anjan Singh at the top of the Glenmore batting order and once again they got the innings off to a reasonable start, putting on 18 for the first wicket. Anjan was the first man to go, perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw for 7. Nabeel came in at number 3 and repaid his captain's faith in him fantastically. While Storey (19) was working the ball around into gaps Nabeel was far more brutal. Twice he was able to clear his front leg and smash the ball for six. He also played a beautiful shot down the ground for four. Nabeel is clearly a naturally striker of the ball and his quick fire 37 was a fantastic innings. It certainly gave Glenmore plenty of impetus and made life easier for the guys coming in down the order.

Following Nabeel's onslaught Glenmore stumbled a little, with Iqbal (7), Waseem (1) and Nadeem (1) all falling cheaply. Hardeep though remained cool, calm and collected, and his 10 not out meant the result was never in question. 12 balls still remained when the winning runs were hit, which is a massive amount of time in such a short game.

Congratulations to Pasha and his men on another excellent display.
