Weekly Club Update - Monday 10th July

10 Jul 2023

IT'S BEEN A FEW WEEKS since I sent an update detailing the club's fortunes. There's been plenty happening, and I'm pleased to report the wins have outweighed the losses.

The Glenmore Knights enjoyed a very comfortable victory against New West on Saturday morning at a picture perfect Riley Park. A fantastic display in the field meant they bowled New West out for just 84. Faisal Mehmood was the star with ball, taking 4 crucial wickets while only going for 16 from his 7 overs. The spin of Dan Paul (2-15) and Hari Venkat (2-18) was also highly effective and economical, helping keep New West well below par. Chasing 80-odd at Riley can often times be a tricky task but the Knights batting order made short work of things, knocking the runs off in just 14 overs! Ahsan Javaid did most of the heavy lifting, smacking 42 from just 29 deliveries. Adil Amin was unbeaten on 23 at the end and finished the game off to claim a handsome 7 wicket win.

Check out the club website for all the photos from the game.

ON FRIDAY EVENING THE BLUES didn't enjoy the same comfort as they managed to win a thriller at Inland Large against Cavaliers. They had appeared to be cruising to victory with Cavaliers needing 56 from the last 5 overs, but a few wides and some swash-buckling batting meant the drama went down to the final over when Cavaliers needed 10 to win. At which point the ball was thrown to Daksh Bhatt who hasn't bowled a ball all season. Daksh held his nerve and secured a super 2 run win for the Blues. It capped off a great game for Daksh who had earlier retired unbeaten on 32. Damian Britt also enjoyed an excellent all round performance, smoking 32* from 16 balls and taking 2 for 21 with the ball.

Daksh Bhatt, Man of the Match

NOT EVERYTHING WENT GLENMORE'S way this past week. On Monday the Taverners lost a close game against Lions XI at Inland. A solid effort with the bat, with runs for Chris Austin, Manish Angl and Bijju Mohankumar allowed Tavs to post a competitive total of 156. Lions XI got off to a rapid start and were 78-2 from 8 overs, but a good come back from the bowlers increased the pressure on the their run chase. There was a strange moment at the end of the game as Lions XI lost two wickets in one ball. A single retired one batsman and a run out attempting a second accounted for the other batsman. And so two new batters walked out to the middle needing 2 runs to win and Tavs requiring one wicket for an unlikely victory. Sadly, the number 10 smashed a 4 to give Lions XI a well deserved win.

On Saturday the Braves weren't able to defeat Knight Riders, losing by 23 runs chasing 214. An excellent 53 from 42 balls for Saumitra Yadav had threatened to make it a closer contest but it wasn't to be as the tail fell away quickly.

IN THE T20 COMPETITION BOTH OUT TEAMS won on Wednesday evening in very similar fashion. Braves and Knights both batted first, with Braves making 150-5 (Manav Attri led the charge with 54 at the top of the order, while Aniket Desai 33, Ankush Jain 21* and Venky Takuri 25* all chipped in with vital runs), and Knights posting 114 all out (Usama Saeed top scoring with 38). The bowlers of both teams then performed brilliantly to bowl out their opponents for 98 and 97 respectively. Saurabh Gulati was the star for the Braves, taking 2 for 8 in his 3 overs. For the Knights Humza Javed was the man of the hour, claiming 4-27 in 4 overs. The wins leave Braves in 4th position, while the Knights sit atop the division having played 7 games.

ON SATURDAY WE HAVE OUR LAWN BOWLS event at the Bow Valley Bowling Club. If anyone wishes to attend but hasn't contacted me yet, please do so as soon as possible. It is $20 per person and the fun will run from 2pm-5pm.
