Weekly Club Update - Thursday 23rd June

23 Jun 2022

IT IS FAIR TO SAY our 1st XI haven't had an easy season so far, but on Saturday they produced a victory that will live long in the memory. The hero of the hour was team captain and club stalwart, Anjan Singh. He produced a truly heroic innings of 52 not out from 98 deliveries, in the face of increasing pressure. Our boys were up against St John's 1st XI, and were chasing just 122 from 50 overs following a magnificent performance with the ball. But, as often happens, chasing a small total can be tricky. Opening batsmen Ankush Jain and Jaideep Singh both made it to double figures but a flurry of wickets left us in all kinds of trouble at 38-5. Our top order had been knocked over and St Johns were running rampant. Anjan was holding firm despite the carnage, knocking the ball around and safely negotiating the St Johns attack. Tejas Chitre stuck around for a while, putting on 28 valuable runs with his skipper. But, when number 11 Mohammad Sherzai walked to the middle things were looking decidedly bleak. He managed to withstand 22 deliveries while contributing 5 runs. It was now all on Anjan's shoulders to get his team across the line. With the pressure mounting he kept his head, went past fifty and made sure he secured a hugely important, impressive victory. A true captains innings.

Earlier in the day all the Glenmore bowlers bowled beautifully to knock over St Johns for a paltry 121. Jaideep was the most successful, taking 4 for 30 from 7.2 overs. He was given excellent support from Navi Parmar (3-11), who now sits atop the most wickets table in the Premier division, and Tejas (2-23 from 10).

Massive congratulations to Anjan and his team for a famous victory. Hopefully this will propel the 1st XI to bigger and better things for the remainder of the season.

LAST FRIDAY SAW ANOTHER all Glenmore encounter in the Weeknight league as the Royals took on the Blues at Riley Park. Conditions weren't ideal, but our two teams ensured it was another terrifically fun evening played in great spirits.

Blues skipper Reece Trevillion won the toss and decided to bat first. Chris Owens was the first Blues batter to make it to 30 not out, helping himself to three big 6s along the way. Damian Britt also found himself retired on 30* having held the innings together through the middle overs. The Royals had done well to keep the scoring rate in check, with Raman Dhillon particularly economical going for just 18 from his 4 overs. However, the Blues innings was given some momentum in the later overs thanks to a typically ferocious innings from Reece (31* off 12 balls) and a handy 16* from 10 by Ryan Jenkinson. The late surge took the Blues up to 159-5.

Unfortunately for the Royals their innings could hardly have got off to a worse start, with the top three all getting run out! It was 18-3 and they had a mountain to climb. Club newcomer David Hazell got things looking a little brighter as he made 31*, but the Blues excellence in the field continued as Daksh Bhatt took a remarkable catch in the deep to get rid of Theunis van der Linde. A one handed grab at long on after running backwards, stopping short for the ball to go over his head and snatching it from behind him single handed.

As they did last year, Dan Miekle (24) and Jawwad Qureshi (32*) proved to be a good partnership for the Royals. Jawwad was particularly impressive as he reached his retirement in excellent style. But two more run outs late in the innings meant the Royals fell short by 29 runs.

Congratulations to both teams for an excellent game played in the right way.
