Weekly Club Update - May 20th 2022

20 May 2022

PLEASE JOIN ME in thanking all our In2Cricket coaches for providing a wonderful 6 week program for our junior cricketers. The Spring program wrapped up last weekend and concluded what has been a hugely successful, popular return to us providing Calgary kids a chance to learn the sport. All the feedback we have received has been extremely positive, so a massive thank you to Ahsan Javaid, Raman Dhillon, Matt Chilvers, Rich Harvey, Ryan Jenkinson, Marcus Levermore, Chris Owens, Dan Paul, Fahad Nayyar, Theunis van der Linde and Shrihari Venkat. We could not be more appreciative of all the time and effort you have given.

The final session was particularly exciting for the kids as Canadian international cricketer Hamza Tariq came along to hand out the certificates, sign some pictures and pose for some photos. We thank Hamza for his generosity, and encourage everyone to check out his new cricket academy which starts in June.

THERE HAS SURELY never been a better club debut than Tyler Ingram's last Sunday. Only Mark Turner's debut hundred back in 2015 could possibly compete. Tyler produced an astonishing display with the ball to pick up 5 wickets for just 15 runs from his 4 overs, and that included a hat-trick! The young Tasmanian destroyed the Calgary Avengers batting order, but was given significant support from Ravi Sunkaranam who bowled his socks off to take 4-14! Between them Tyler and Ravi meant the game was over nice and early as the Avengers were dismissed for just 34.

Earlier in the game the 2nd XI had recovered from a shaky start to post an excellent score. Club stalwart Nabeel Ayubi led the recovery as he has done so often down the years. He smashed a superb 51 from just 32 deliveries, including 5 big sixes! There was a useful innings of 26* from Muhammad Hayat at the end to power the score up to 172.

Check out the scorecard here.

Things are looking very good for the 2nd XI who are now top of the league with 4 wins out of 4.

THE WEEKNIGHT season got underway on Monday evening with the Taverners taking on Cubs in perfect conditions at Westwinds. New team captain Bijju Mohankumar won the toss and elected to bat first, a task the Tavs took to with great relish as they posted a whopping 205-5 from their 20 overs. Marcus Levermore (31* off 28) and Chris Austin (10) set a solid base at the top of the order, and former skipper Terry McGrath unfurled some trademark cover drives during his brisk 20. But the fireworks really began when Dan Paul strode to the middle. Making his Tavs debut, the left handed Aussie smoked his first ball for six (tipped over the rope by the long on fielder) and proceeded to reach his 30 not out from just 13 balls. Bijju (31* off 19) and Alex Storey (33* off 17) both retired as they put on 48 in quick time. The innings ended with some enthusiastic running between the wickets from Jason Bell (12 off 12) to take the score past 200.

Cubs were never in the hunt to get close to their target, with only one batsman making it to double figures (Hussain Fahad whacking 22 from one Jason Bell over). Bijju rotated his bowlers to give them all a feel of the pink ball, and wickets were shared around. Colin Nieuwenhuizen returned to the Taverners after a few years away and picked up 2-11. Freddy Bhathena bowled beautifully to take 2-10 from his four overs. He should have had a third but the hard hands of Chris Austin at slip cost him dearly. Riekert Panther ended up the most successful of the bowlers, finding an immaculate line and length and finishing with 3-1-10-3.

Congratulations to the Taverners. You can see the match scorecard here. And we wish the Glenmore Royals all the best in their season opener tonight against New West Bisons. Good luck guys.
