Glenmore Cricket Club News story

Weekly Club Update - Fri 6th May

06 May 2022

OUR 2022 SEASON got off to the perfect start last weekend with our 1st and 2nds XIs producing three wins out of three! An amazing way to kick off the Summer, and hopefully a sign of things to come for the club as a whole.

The 1st XI, playing in the top division of the T20 league, played Knight Riders at Inland Large. On a chilly, windy day they showed they belonged with the top teams in town. Bowling first, Glenmore restricted Knight Riders from the first over, with Gautam Verma setting the tone by starting the season with four dot balls. Saurabh Gulati shared the new ball and was the most successful of the bowlers, taking 3-23 from his four overs. All the bowlers did a great job containing the scoring, and they were superbly supported in the field, particularly when Ankush Jain and Aniket Desai combined to produce a thrilling run out.

141 may have been a challenging target but Anjan Singh (35) and Manav Attri (31) ensured the run chase began in a calm, secure fashion. Maintaining the scoring rate throughout meant victory was always going to be achieved without any great pressure. It was left to Rajeev Sharma to finish the game in style, with an excellent 43 not out from 23 balls. A 7 wicket victory and a terrific opening win.

THE 2ND XI played twice in the opening weekend. Their first victory was a comfortable one. The second was more of a nail biter. The opening fixture was against Zalmi Wolves. Ameer Hamza won the toss, batted first and watched his team rack up a monumental 246-5. Ahsan Javaid (31 off 16) smashed the second ball of the match over long off for 6, and from then on there was no stopping the powerful Glenmore batting order. Adil Amin made a scintillating 77 from 45 balls and Dan Paul made 33 from 20, but the star of the show was Ameer, who smashed 60 not out from just 25 deliveries.

The skipper was straight back into the action after the change of innings, picking up two wickets in his opening over. That set Zalmi back on their heels and they were never in the game from that point on. Ravi Sunkaranam was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-11 from three overs on his debut for the club.

WHEN YASIR IQBAL was smashing 30 in an over for Blackcaps on Sunday afternoon it looked as though our 2nds would be struggling to defend their total of 196. He went on to complete a thrilling hundred from 45 balls, but thankfully Sazid Khan then picked him up and the squeeze was applied to the run chase. Sazid bowled beautifully (2-27), as did Ahsan Javaid (2-29), and eventually Blackcaps were all out for 178.

Earlier in the day there had been useful contributions with the bat from a number of the Glenmore batters. Kamran Chaudhry, coming off a duck the previous day, made a stylish 50. Ahsan (37), Ameer (39*), Abdur Khan (15) and Shadman Sakib (14) all chipped in to take the score up toward 200.

Man of the Match award shared between Sazid Khan and Ahsan Javaid

Massive congratulations to everyone who played at the weekend, particularly those guys making their debuts for the club. We wish you all a long, successful, enjoyable time playing for Glenmore Cricket Club. And good luck to the 1sts and 2nds this weekend. Fixtures are listed above.
