Match report PROLOGUE

Before we get to Glenmore's game on Monday, let's quickly cover their non-game on Sunday. Glenmore's 1st XI were due to play Predators at Riley Park, but it never happened. The annual Super Bash T20 tournament was due to be played at Westwinds, but the wet conditions there meant the event was quickly moved to Riley. The teams, umpires and organisers arrived shortly after we did and we were promptly informed that game would be cancelled so the star studded Super Bash teams could play. Our boys weren't too impressed but we were powerless to do anything about it.

So, after a short delay the game between Calgary Fire (with star player Davy Jacobs) and Edmonton Millwoods started. However, on the far side of the ground a large crowd had gathered. They were there to witness a strange sport not usually found in Canada. Alas, it was not the Super Bash they were interested in, but rather an exhibition game of Quidditch! The local Harry Potter festival had brought thousands to the streets of Kensington, and the centerpiece was the wonderful, wizardy Quidditch extravaganza. The crowds kept their backs to the cricket as the participants straddled their broomsticks and started tossing around the quaffle.

Due to the size of the unsuspecting crowd, and the likelihood that sooner or later a cricket ball would be sent flying into the mass of Quidditch fans, after five overs the umpires stopped play. A discussion took place and it was soon decided that the cricket would have to be stopped to ensure the safety of the general public. The game was called off and the teams returned to Westwinds in the hope that things had dried up there.

It was surely the first time in history that Quidditch Stopped Play! Only in Calgary!

GLENMORE 1ST XI VS KNIGHT RIDERS

Glenmore's unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Monday as Knight Riders ran out comfortable winners at Riley Park. They produced an excellent all round display to take the 6 points and top spot in Division 1.

Alex Storey won the toss and elected to bat first, but it was Storey who was first out as Knight Riders quickly took the upper hand. Throughout the innings the Knight Riders' bowlers maintained an impeccable line and length on and around off stump. The packed the off side field meant the Glenmore batters had very few scoring options. Great patience was required, but that resulted in the scoreboard stalling and panic setting in. Time after time the batsmen fell attempting big shots as the disciplined bowling kept a strangehold on the run rate. Only Amardeep Singh seemed happy to defend when necessary and to take some scoring opportunities when the bowlers' erred onto the legside. But even he succumbed when trying to get after the spinner. Massive credit must go to the Knight Riders attack for keeping the pressure on throughout the innings, but even so, it was a pretty poor batting display from the Glenmore lads.

Defending 70 was always going to be hard work but Glenmore gave themselves a chance thanks to a terrific start. Once again the bowlers did fantastically well, as they have done all Summer, and pressure was soon mounting on Knight Riders' middle order. However, it was a breakdown in communication between the opening pair that resulted in the first wicket. Mid-pitch confusion and a sharp throw from Ikbal Sandhu meant a run out was in the book. More early wickets followed thanks to superb opening spells from Manjinder Sandhu (10-1-23-2)) and Taha Lodhi (9-1-23-1). Both bowlers looked dangerous and were unfortunate to not have more success. Manji had the ball swinging beautifully and narrowly missed the stumps on numerous occasions. Taha was a constant threat and should have had another wicket when a catch went down at slip.

With the score at 20-4 Glenmore had a real chance, but the combined efforts of Haider and Khayyam took the game away from them. Both batsmen looked to be aggressive, each hitting some big sixes down the ground. With such a small target it was only going to take one substantial partnership to win the game, and so it proved as Haider and Khayyam put on fifty and sealed the victory.

The Glenmore bowlers had done all they could, but they had been let down earlier in the day by their batsmen. Batting at Riley is a tricky task at the best of times, but Glenmore's top order need to find a method to start making bigger and better totals.

EPILOGUE

Monday was the last time (for a while at least) Glenmore would have the pleasure of Paul Cousins scoring the game. Paul has been our scorer for the past two seasons, both indoor and outdoor. No other club has had the good fortune to have a professional scorer sat on the sidelines, and no other club has had the unique pleasure of getting to know our beloved Cuz! Things are never dull with Paul around. Always quick to tell a batsman off for a bad shot, or a fielder for a bad drop, Paul keeps his heart on his sleeve. As well as being a great scorer, Paul will also be remembered for being a natural at Beer Pong!

Paul is heading for Fort Smith in the North West Territories. Apparently he's looking forward to the -55 temperatures in the middle of their dark winters! We wish him all the best, and hope to see him back with us some day soon. Thanks for everything Cuz!
