Cavaliers I v Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves on Sat 13 Aug 2016 at 12pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
It took less than 33 overs for Glenmore to wrap up a comfortable win over Cavaliers at Riley Park on Saturday. The game was started early so the Glenmore players could enjoy some of the club BBQ. In the end the game was all over a full two hours before the festivities were due to start!
Glenmore won the toss and decided to have a bowl first. It was a beautiful, sunny day but there was some humidity in the air and it was likely the ball might hoop around a little. When Manjinder Sandhu is bowling well the ball usually hoops around a lot, which is exactly what happened. Cavs managed to negotiate the first few overs, taking the score to 10, but after that it was a procession of wickets falling in quick succession.
The Glenmore opening attack of Manji and Shariq Akhlaq, back from injury, was absolutely devastating and left the Cavaliers batting line up in disarray. Manji was at his accurate, probing best throughout his magnificent 10 over spell. His usual weapon - the late inswinger to the right hander - was working beautifully. The ball ducking back into the stumps very late in its journey down the pitch, giving all the batsmen a tough job in keeping it out. It was certainly too much for Addala (lbw) and Sharma, who had his stumps destroyed by one that was perfectly pitched. Manji also displayed all his bowling skills by repeatedly beating the batsmen with his away swingers, changing the angle by coming around the wicket, and even sending down a few well directed bouncers. It was a tremendous display from the left armer.
Shariq was equally impressive at the other end and fully deserved his four wickets. In his previous performances this season Shariq has picked up some wickets but deserved many more. It was just a matter of time before he picked up a decent haul, and Cavaliers were the unfortunate team to be blown away by the big, strong quickie. He needed a good catch from Anjan at mid on for his first wicket of the day, but after that he needed no assistance from anyone, knocking back the stumps three times. Just about every delivery he sent down looked like taking a wicket as he gave the batsmen nothing to hit. It was consistent, aggressive, probing bowling.
Shariq and Manji had knocked the stuffing out of the Cavaliers innings by the time Taha and Jaideep entered the attack. Both picked up a wicket. Taha again defeated a batsman with his faster, flatter, top spinner to get an lbw. Jaideep produced possibly the ball of the day to knock over Rohan Javed to finish the innings. Cavaliers all out for 28.
The Glenmore run chase took just 12 overs. Amardeep was the only batsman to fall, lbw for 12. Martyn Challoner (13 not out) and Tejas Chitre (2 not out) safely picked off the runs and came off having barely broken sweat.
Another terrific win for Glenmore's 1st XI, thanks to a wonderful display from Manji and Shariq.
