Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Royals v Pembina on Fri 26 Jun 2015 at 6pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Absolutely fantastic conditions for cricket at Inland Small. Glenmore lost the toss and fielded first. Not a great decision by the stand in Pembina captain as Bobby and then Arnie removed both openers in their opening overs. Another fantastic start given by the opening bowlers. Bobby and Arnie were unlucky to not take further wickets with three decent chances going down in the deep. Jordan was then smashed for a 4 and a 2 off balls which should have bounced three times they were that short. But as he has done all year he came back with a perfect length delivery to remove the batsman's middle stump. That ended a promising Pembina partnership. Another partnership was building until quick thinking and cool as you like under pressure Neil ran out their most dangerous batsman from mid off. After a couple of ordinary games in the field the Royals really did well on the small ground - except for those dropped catches, they were just awful. Bobby returned to bowl the batsman first ball and Matt took a routine catch running from deep long on and taking it at mid off off Arnies bowling. Mafaz bowled a magical spell that had the batsman bamboozled at times. He was justly rewarded with a wicket when Rajeev took a sharp catch at gully (I told you I wouldn't mention those two dropped catches Rajeev, oh darn.) Jordan returned and removed his favourite middle stump to complete the innings, or did he? Apparently Pembina thought you could bat your twelfth man in times of peril or not having enough runs on the board. They seemed genuinely shocked that we could add to 10 and refused to allow them to bat some guy I swear just wandered in off the highway. Anyway all out for 124, well done bowlers and fielders!
In a bold move by the Royals, some of the batsmen were promoted up the order after some promising recent innings. Opening was young Jordan Honywood with the old warhorse Neil Honess whose last innings was cut short by some indecision, poor calling and eventually a run out. They started well with a couple of well placed singles and twos before (YOU KNOW WHATS COMING DON'T YOU) Neil smashed one through the bowlers hands to mid off and took off for a run. The only problem is Neil produces sound waves that apparently anyone with a surname of Honywood is unable to hear. The end result was Neil trying in vain to get back to the strikers end again (I say again because it happened again). In strides JR with instructions from the skipper to not loose wickets in bunches. So what does JR do? Tries unsuccessfully to slog each of the first 4 balls for six. He did settle down a bit and almost played a defensive shot once or maybe he just had something in his eye, I'm not sure. Jordan played some wonderful flicks off his pads but also some of the most horrifyingly horrible shots where he didn't move his feet at all. It reminded me a lot of the English batsmen during the last Ashes series. Anyway he was caught driving a full ball with out any foot movement at all to mid off. After accelerating the scoring with four 4's and a 6 and really getting the team into a promising position JR missed the slow straight full toss on off stump. To be fair to JR he swung so early that I thought he was unlucky not to hit the ball with his second swing. He had shared an excellent partnership with Rajeev who armed with a borrowed bat decided the best way to intimidate the bowler was to hit him with the ball. After being dropped by the bowler Rajeev continued his straight drive assault by nearly knocking out the umpire as well. His anchoring role really set up the Royals win today and along with PJ who played some lovely cuts and pulls put on a match winning partnership. PJ was ably assisted by JR who was his runner until after running 7 doubles JR signalled to his teammates that he needed a runner. After being informed that you couldn't have a runner for a runner he was duly replaced by Mitch. PJ was dismissed after a fine innings caught behind. Mitch apparently had a hot date tonight and was not going to be late. He once again took apart the bowling and like the true sporting hero he is retired early so that Angad, on debut from the Academy could have a bat. After a few nervy deliveries Angad worked the ball between wicketkeeper and slip for 4 and the winning runs. What a game, what a team effort. The team spirit was exceptional tonight and the way everyone looks after each other and is genuinely happy for each others success is truly a wonderful thing.
Debut: Angad Singh 4 not out
3 Stars
1. Rajeev Agarwal - Some lusty blows and anchored the Royals innings. The last anyone saw of Rajeev he was running from the field with his borrowed bat tucked firmly under his arm.
2. Jordan/Bobby/Arnie. 2 wickets apiece really set up the win.
3. JR/PJ/Mitch Great batting in the middle overs saw us chase down the total with ease.
Next game is against some other team on Monday.
