Run Riders v Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Royals on Fri 05 Jun 2015 at 6pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets

Match report Absolutely glorious day at Riley Park for what turned out to be quite the dramatic game in more ways than one.

The day was looking promising for the Royals as they won the toss (again!) and decided to field first on the dodgy up and down wicket. Proceedings took a turn for the worse though as the Royals lost their scorer who was totally unhappy at the lack of information given to him before the game. For this I completely blame the captain for his lack of organisation and thoughtfulness. I have it on good authority that he has been told by the selection panel to shape up or his match fee will be halved!!

Back in the game as Sheshi and Pasha both bowled very tight to restrict the openers to hurried singles. There was a chance of a run out as Colin was very quick on a drop shot to the covers however Nix was unable to take the underarm throw. Pasha was unlucky as he took the edge which eluded both wicket keeper and first slip. The opening bowlers were well supported by Arnie and Mafaz who both bowled very well. When Jordan came on to bowl he was a little short and wide (and by a little I mean a lot) and was hit for two sixes and a four in his first over. However, he responded exceptionally well to nearly take a hat trick in his next over. He had the first player well caught by Colin at gully before trapping the next batter LBW next ball. It was a bit dubious as it looked a little high. The umpire thought so as well because Jordan had the next batter plumb in front only for the umpire to give a make up call and give it not out. No hat tricks today. Matt and Colin both took two solid catches each and Mitch took one off the blades of grass to his right for the catch of the game. Stark contrast to previous games when we dropped 67 catches in total. Pasha came back on and mopped up the tail with a very Mitchell Starc like performance. The only difference was he is shorter, slower and right handed, otherwise you couldn't tell the difference.

We're still not quite sure how their score jumped from 92 to 110 in the last two overs but 110 was the set score! Maybe if we had looked after our scorer we would have had a fair score. I will talk with the captain again.
Our chase did not start well as Mitch and Colin both went early. Mitch (the human muscle fibre) is all or none at the moment either scoring 30* or getting out for a duck. Today he scored 1 run while Colin was caught trying to pull one that jumped on him for 3. What has hindered the Royals progress in previous games has been losing wickets in clumps so the pressure was on Arnie and young Jordan Honywood (you may have seen him on TV). A solid partnership was needed and that is what was provided with lots of singles on this ridiculously long grassed field. Arnie finally had had enough and tried to hit out but missed a straight one while Jordan flicked a nice shot straight down the throat of backward square leg. Sheshi looked good but would have looked better if he stayed out there longer while Art and JR had the partnership of the game. We had fallen behind on the run rate so quick runs were needed and JR was not looking to block. Actually I've never seen him block, I'm not sure he even knows how to block. Anyway he and Art played wonderfully together as Art continued to turn over the strike and JR punished the bowling with some big hitting including two 6's and two 4's. He obviously got under the Run Riders skin as they appealed for a caught behind that was given not out. Their appeal was a cross between Dennis Lillee on PCP's and Dale Steyne on Steroids! Totally over the top. They were not happy but worse was to come. The next ball, just as the bowler bowled the ball two of the fielders yelled at JR to put him off. JR skied the ball to backward point and was caught (with the Run Riders giving him a two fingered send off that would have made Brad Haddin blush), or was he? No, Sprogg the square leg umpire called a dead ball as the players had obviously not played within the spirit of the game. Well now all hell had broken out as the Run Riders surrounded the umpire and demanded that he be given out. Then they found out that Sprogg was with Glenmore and well this is just not cricket! After a good 5 minutes of discussions (I can't tell you what was said but it didn't look very nice) the game got back underway and JR hit another 6 and 4 to retire NO on 32. In strode the captain with 18 runs needed and 4 wickets in hand. Luckily we have an ice cool, tremendously calm under pressure leader to come in at this stage of the game and settle things down. Block first ball, check. Needlessly run out Arthur going for an overthrow, check! Then Nix strides in, engages in some banal banter with the bowler before coming down the track to a nice full and straight one and completely forgetting to play any shot at all. Now we're down to Matt and Mafaz with a crocked Pasha waiting in the wings. 10 needed off the last 2 overs although Matt calmly blocks 4 of the balls to set up a tense final over with 7 needed. Some ordinary shots and less than ordinary bowling saw the Mighty Royals home with 2 balls to spare. No worries at all, part of the master plan wasn't it.

So the good guys win, the other guys were complaining about the umpire, the Glenmore guy who volunteered to umpire at square leg for the whole game which is not fair at all and that is what cost them the game. There was no mention of their excessive appealing (like when it pitches outside leg hits outside the line and they still have a go at the umpire!) Nor was there any mention of their lack of sportsmanship and the send off to JR that was totally uncalled for.

Anyway, Glenmore should be proud of the way their team didn't get involved in the negative side of cricket, particularly Sprogg, Art and JR who were out in the middle when all the drama played out.

3 Stars
1st Star - JR for a match winning innings of 32*.
2nd Star - Jordan (not his first over that's for sure) but returned with 3 wickets and showed great composure for someone so young.
3rd Star - Colin for excellent bowling and took two solid catches.
