Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves v Knight Riders on Mon 07 Sep 2015 at 11am
Glenmore Cricket Club Lost by 8 runs

Match report Glenmore's play-off ambitions were finally ended with another narrow defeat at Riley Park on Monday. This time the margin of defeat was 8 runs. It looked like being significantly more until Anjan Singh changed the game in one over, smashing 16 to give his team a chance. Sadly, the fairytale finish was not to be.

This was Glenmore's fifth consecutive game at Riley Park, and it followed a familiar pattern with ball dominating the bat throughout both innings. The new concrete wicket hasn't made life any easier for the batsmen, with plenty of movement on offer both sideways and up and down. And with the grass at it's most lush and long, there really isn't much for the batsmen to smile about.

However, life's pretty good at Riley these days if you happen to be a bowler, and once again the Glenmore attack enjoyed the conditions and performed extremely well. Suki Ghotra, arriving mere moments before the start of play, bowled with his usual accuracy with the new ball but was unable to add to his wickets tally for the season. Instead it was his new ball partner Farid Iqbal who made the first breakthrough, knocking over Kiaini's off stump as the opener attempted a wild swing. Farid has slipped perfectly into the 1st XI and again produced a smart, probing opening spell.

With the ball quickly getting wet, swing bowlers Jaideep Singh and Sam Lidgerwood were introduced into the attack early on. Sam, so unlucky in his initial few games, struck with his first ball. It was a perfectly pitched outswinger on off stump that took a feather through to the wicketkeeper. Three balls later the same partnership struck again, this time Haider nicking behind to leave Knight Riders 27-3. Sam should have had a third wicket shortly afterwards, but Storey dropped a regulation catch.

Riders' star player Khurram Tahir was looking particularly solid against the Glenmore bowlers, but he fell to Jaideep Singh, spooning a catch to Rich Harvey at square leg. This was to be Jaideep's day with the ball, ending up with five wickets for just 26 runs from his eight overs. Jai maintained an attacking line so was always in with a shout of getting some success. Ranbir Badesha had tonked a few meaty blows, including a 6 off Sam that almost cleared the trees at long on. However, Jai picked him up for 22 thanks to an excellent grab by Farid at mid-wicket. The ball looked to be tailing away from Farid as he went with two hands, but at the last minute he decided to simply thrust out his right mitt and the ball stuck.
It was smiles all round when Anjan held onto a catch at mid-off in the same over. What followed was a series of chop-ons onto the stumps. Jai twice hit the stumps following an inside edge, as did Iqbal Sandhu. Farid claimed his second wicket when he clipped the off bail, causing a big, loud celebration.
Knight Riders were all out for 91 inside 35 overs. Jai was the big wicket taker but all the bowlers did fantastically well.
It was now over to the batsmen to knuckle down and grind out the win. But, a combination of some excellent bowling and some abject batting meant it was a fruitless chase. Tahir got things started for Knight Riders, and he twice had Mark turner dropped in the first over of the innings. Tahir and his new ball partner Kiani made life very difficult in the early exchanges. While Turns defended and left the ball well , his opening partner Storey threw his wicket away by swishing at a wide delivery and was pouched at slip. Adam Knox was soon adjudged lbw for a duck to leave the scoreboard at 19-2.
Turns is too good a player to be tied down for long, and three times he launched the seam bowlers back down the ground for boundaries. He and Jai took the score to 35 before Badesha, the slow medium swing bowler clean bowled Mark for 24. It was to be Badesha's first of five wickets on the day, and he quickly had his second when Iqbal Sandhu was caught at long-on for a single. And when Jai was caught behind playing a shot very similar to Storey's, Glenmore were in desperate trouble at 41-5.
Only now did a pair of batsmen show some grit and determination, with Anjan and Jon Bray happy to bat time and slowly accumulate runs. There were plenty of overs remaining and the run rate was never going to be an issue. They defended, left, nudged and nurdled and gradually the score crept up. At 59-5 Glenmore's hopes were beginning to lift. Sadly, Jonno got an excellent delivery from Haider that spat at him from a length and took the outside edge. After that dismissal nobody else was able to dig in and keep Anjan company. Sam was run out for a duck, Farid was caught behind and following Anjan's big over to take Glenmore to within 10 runs, Suki hit one straight to cover. The game ended when Anjan, again looking to attack the legside boundary, was hit on the box and given out lbw for an excellent 26.
It was a very disappointing run chase again from Glenmore, and it summed up the issues of the last month or so with the batsmen not being able to find a method to succeed at Riley.
However, let's not get too down about things. One more game (at Riley) remains before the cricket gear gets put away and we all get out our skis!
