Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves v Kanata Panthers I on Sun 23 Aug 2015 at 11am
Glenmore Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Glenmore's 1st XI played out another nail biting, dramatic game with Kanata Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Coming two weeks on from a tied game against Panthers, this time Glenmore fell agonisingly short, going down by one wicket. The match was won primarily thanks to a truly excellent performance by the youngest player of the 22...Robin Sekhon is only 16 but batted with a tremendous maturity to score a crucial 32 from 120 deliveries. Hopefully the Glenmore top order will have learned a few things from seeing how he went about his innings.

Although it was another poor display with the bat from the Glenmore boys, they did in fact get off to a decent start. Storey and Knox were the first batsmen to experience the new concrete pitch at Riley Park, and they negotiated things well in the early stages. The new surface definitely helped the batsmen play their strokes with some more confidence, as Storey showed when pulling a four in the second over. Knoxy too looked comfortable, and played a number of crunching drives down the ground. Sadly, as ever at Riley Park, the long grass prevented Adam from getting the value his shots deserved. Together the opening pair kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely and had laid a strong platform with the score on 35-0 after 10 overs. However, it was at that point that Storey played a terribly ugly hoik across the line and was clean bowled for 20. It started something of a pattern in the innings as a number of batsmen fell in a similar fashion.

In order to build a good total a batting team has to work together and have some significant partnerships. The fact that Glenmore only achieved two partnerships that made it into double figures shows both the frequency wickets fell, and the inability to buckle down and play the situation sensibly. It seemed that no matter how many wickets had fallen, Glenmore's batsmen would continue to play big shots. Adam Knox had looked in fine touch for his 16 but succumbed to the spin of Ramiz. He tried to wallop the off-spinner over the leg-side but could only get a top edge and was easily taken at slip. The only other partnership to move the total forwards was between Anjan Singh and Ram Swaminathan. Anjan played in his naturally aggressive fashion and did the bulk of the scoring. Ram batted very well though and looked in good form. He may well have been the man to stay in and gradually nudge the score along but he was caught in the slips thanks to a ball that lifted off a length and took his glove. With Jaideep, Sam, Ryan and Reagan all falling for single figure scores, all hopes rested on Anjan's shoulders. Sadly his knock ended on 22 from 37 deliveries when he attempted one big shot too many and lost his off stump.

The Glenmore tail didn't last too long and following a quick change around the teams were back out in the middle with Kanata Panthers needing just 102 to win. They may have been confident of knocking off the runs, but Glenmore's bowlers have performed wonderfully all Summer and so it was always likely to be a tough ask. It very quickly became a tougher ask when Reagan Nel struck in his first over. The young South African found a good line and length early in his spell, managed to lure Amit into a drive outside off stump and Jenko took a sharp catch at short cover. Suki then clean bowled Waqas in the very next over with a beautiful swinging delivery. And when Raman dragged on for 8 to make it three wickets in three overs, Glenmore were right on top. The scoreboard read 19-3 and all the momentum was with the bowlers. Every ball in the early exchanges looked like taking a wicket. Both Suki and Reagan were swinging the ball away beautifully while maintaining a nagging, disciplined area around off stump. Both bowlers repeatedly beat the outside edge, something that was to continue throughout the innings, and were extremely unfortunate not to have even better figures than they did.

Suki claimed his second wicket when Anjan Singh took a skier at mid-off off the ultra-aggressive Imad. Suki has been a fantastically consistent performer all season, and deserved better than his 2-25 from 10 overs. In the end it was Reagan Nel who got the wickets in a terrific spell of 10 overs, five wickets for just 18 runs. He swung the ball throughout and kept to his plan of probing away outside off stump. Panthers had managed to get through nine overs without losing any further wickets, but it was the 16th over of the innings that Reagan really turned the tide in Glenmore's favour. It was the last over before drinks, which is often a moment the batsmen don't enjoy. Second ball of the over Reagan clean bowled Rahim and drinks were immediately taken with the score on 38-5. First ball after drinks the left handed Romit tried driving a length ball from Reagan. It appeared the ball would just clear Ali Memon at point but at the last possible moment the big fella leaped skywards, stretched out his right mitt and took an extraordinary catch. Three balls later Reagan struck again, knocking over the middle stump of Qamar, to leave Panthers reeling on 38-7 and young Master Nel celebrating his first five wicket haul for the club. There will surely be many more to come for Reagan in the future if he continues to bowl like this.

38 for 7. 64 runs required and only three wickets in hand. The ball still swinging around. Glenmore right on top. Surely there could only be one winner. But, as we should all know by know, cricket is a funny old game and strange things can happen. The two batsmen for Panthers were young Robin Sekhon and Ramiz, and they made a decision to bat for as long as they possibly could. The run rate would never be an issue, so if they could just stay in then that target would gradually edge closer and the pressure would shift back onto Glenmore. And so it proved to be. Jaideep and Sam Lidgerwood entered the bowling attack, and performed just as admirably as the previous bowlers. They continued to shape the ball past the outside edge, but whereas all the other batsmen in the match had looked to take the attack to the bowlers, Robin and Ramiz dug in. Robin in particular showed exactly the method everyone else should have employed. He left the ball frequently, and was rock solid in his defensive strokes. Time and again Jai and Sam looked to test the youngster with deliveries pitched in the ideal spot, but every time he responded with a forward defensive and another dot ball. If his technique was impressive then his temperament was even more so. At no point did he panic or lose focus of how to go about the run chase. It was incredibly good to see a young batsman play in such a manner, and he deserves a great deal of credit for his innings.

Robin found excellent support in the form of Ramiz who also played a sturdy, solid innings. Together they batted for 25 overs, and their partnership of 45 had taken their team to within touch distance of the target. By now Rich Harvey had entered the attack and barely bowled a bad ball. Perhaps Robin let his concentration slip for a moment as the target got closer, but he played a slog-sweep to Richie and the ball soared high into the air. Ram got under it and took a crucial catch. The score was now 83-8 and less than 10 overs remaining. On the sidelines a growing crowd had gathered in preparation for the Glenmore BBQ, and there were nerves all around. In the huddle skipper Storey emphasised that there would definitely be two further chances to come, and that the game was there for the taking.

Rich Harvey continued to keep things tight but the runs kept coming here and there, and the next chance was taking a while to come. Jaideep returned to the attack and produced an amazing delivery to knock over Ramiz's leg stump. The ball looked to be going down the leg-side for a vital wide but it swung back at the last moment to clip the top of leg stump, and take the game into a thrilling climax. Panthers needed 3 to win and Glenmore required just one more wicket. Jaideep had two balls remaining in his over. He beat the outside edge yet again but couldn't quite win the match. With the field set for a big shot against Rich, Zeeshan obliged by swinging the ball into the legside. However, it fell between three fielders and the Panthers batsmen made it back to complete the winning runs.

It had been another tense, back-and-forth game of cricket that left Glenmore feeling heart broken as they trudged off. The bowlers had done everything that could have been asked of them, but once again the batsmen had let themselves down. Panthers deserved their victory purely on the strength of the partnership between Robin and Ramiz.

However, Glenmore can once again take some positives from the way they fought in the second half of the match and the way they stuck together. Hopefully that attitude will remain until the end of the season and another win won't be too far around the corner.
