Kanata Panthers I v Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves on Sun 25 May 2014 at 12pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Lost By 66 runs
Match report
An abject fielding display from Glenmore was the root cause of their loss to old rivals Kanata Panthers at Westwinds. Numerous catches went down as Panthers posted an imposing 274. Glenmore got off to a bad start with the bat which left them with too much of a mountain to climb.
The Panthers' opening pair of Sazid Khan and former Glenmore player Nasir Khan got off to a decent start against Dave Hope-Johnstone and Ruwan Thushantha. Nasir boshed Ruby back over his head for four, while Sazid managed to get a few cuts away to the rope off Dave. Their partership was brought to abrupt halt when Ruwan tempted Nasir into a pull and the ball flew to Regan Black at mid wicket. At the other end Dave was bowling an immaculate spell, constantly nagging away around off stump. He should have had two wickets when catches went down on the legside, but he controlled his inevitable frustration to produce an excellent yorker to remove Sazid.
Jawad Habib had some fun during his brief innings, whacking a few fours and sixes over the leg side. His knock of 32 was brought to a close when he found Ruwan at mid-on off Ali Memon's bowling.
The top three had been removed and at 70-3 Panther's needed to rebuild. And that they did, batting through the middle session without losing another wicket. Umar Farooq survived a confident caught behind appeal to produce an excellent innings of 67. Umar has looked like becoming a top quality batsman for a long time, and he produced a gem of an innings against the Glenmore attack. He ran briskly, was solid in defense, and chose exactly the right moments to attack. A few lofted drives over extra cover were particularly memorable. Umar's partner was Muzaffar Mian, who had made an unbeaten fifty for Cavs in the season opening against Glenmore. Together they made Glenmore toil in the afternoon sunshine.
Glenmore had some success in the latter stages of the Panthers' innings, but were never able to completely stop the scoring. Dave Sherjan bowled a useful spell and picked up the wicket of Umar. Ali Memon produced a couple of excellent spells, and was unfortunate not to have more than three wickets. He was consistent throughout and had little luck, despite having Ali Abid caught by Levermore and Zahid Ali caught by Storey. Th wicketkeeper put down two further chances off Memon's bowling, while also dropping a chance off Regan's bowling.
Regan bowled at a tough time in the innings, with Panthers' looking to attack, but did extremely well to go at just 4 an over. Regan mixed up his flight and ball speed to excellent effect to really keep a lid on their scoring. He thoroughly deserved his wickets, with a couple coming thanks to catches by Hope-Johnstone and one to Ruwan.
Despite some good bowling by Hope-Johnstone, Memon and Black too many chances went begging, and when the final wicket down at the end of the 50th over Glenmore needed 275 to win.
Glenmore's run chase could hardly have got off to a worse start. Sohail Aslam, the left arm medium pacer, somehow managed to get a short ball to rear up to head height. Bray got himself in a tangle and the ball ricocheted down onto the stumps. 1-1 and the skipper was walking back.
Storey and Sherjan were able to make something of a recovery and took the score past forty, but Sohail was not done with the Glenmore top order yet. Storey (13) played around a straight one to go lbw. Sohail then brought one back between bat and pad to clean up Goldsworthy for a duck.
Sherj, meanwhile, was looking comfortable. His big straight bat met anything on or around the stumps, while he was quickly on the pull when the ball was dropped slightly short. Marcus joined Dave and looked equally measured, repeatedly tucking the ball around the corner to rotate the strike. He was undone for 10 in similar fashion to Bray earlier in the innings. A short ball from Umar got up a little more than expected and Marcus could do nothing but play the ball down onto his stumps.
Glenmore's innings was beginning to look in tatters, but Bart Smith (making his 1st XI debut) and Sherjan stayed together for long enough to keep Glenmore clinging onto some hope. Bart was mostly content to give Dave the strike by dabbing the ball into the off side and taking the single. But he also backed himself to score some runs, and twice smacked the ball down the ground for four.
Dave went past fifty with a typically solid looking back foot drive, and continued to edge Glenmore closer toward their target. With the run rate rising all the time perhaps some additional risk could have been taken, but Dave had confidence in himself that a late onslaught could do the trick.
It was the return of Sohail Aslam that finally ended Glenmore's hopes. First he had Bart caught at cover for a well made 32. Ruwan was sent out with the instruction of teeing off from ball one. He managed to get off the mark with a six but was soon on his way back after having his stumps flattened by Sohail. Hope-Johnstone came and went, and by now any hopes of making 275 were out of the question. The only hope was that Sherjan could make his second century for the club. But alas, his excellent knock was ended when he picked out cover off Habib's gentle off spin. Sherjan ended up with 86...another top quality innings from the consistent number 3.
In the end Glenmore batted out their 50 overs, with Ali Memon making 14 not out, but they finished well short of their target, 208-9.
