Chinar Patriots IV v Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Knights on Sat 28 Sep 2013 at 8.30am
Glenmore Cricket Club Won by 67 runs.

Match report Take nought away from Glenmore first team’s solid, season-long, promotion-gaining performance, capped by a comprehensive win Saturday, but Glenmore’s seconds wound up 2013 with a pretty big bang of their own on the weekend.

In Calgary’s Elite level, where national players lurk, sound batting, especially when chasing, is not common. With 6 staunch innings, 3 of them batting 2nd, in 4 matches, all crafted on treacherous pitches, the 3rd Division GCC II has, easily or almost, left a September string of opponents in their wake. And all, bar one, top- ½-of-table sides.

Some have been chronicled on these pages, but such nuggets bear listing again. Even, Mr Editor, before the match reports. Here they are in order of appearance:

* Iqbal Sandhu 83 Labour day + in narrowly-losing cause to top-of-table Kings XI
* Wasim Naqshbandi 55 n.o. Sun. Sept. 22
* Iqbal 107 Sun. Sept. 22 + won by 165 runs
* Trevor DeFreitas 74 Sat. Sept. 28 + won by 64 runs
* Anjan Singh 70 Sun. Sept. 29
* Iqbal 91 n.o. Sun. Sept. 29 + won by 7 wickets

Knote the kname Knox is Knott knoticeable. But Adam’s September tallies include lbwC* for 39 and 23 n.o., both in low-scoring, narrow defeats. It suggests an even deeper reservoir of GCC batting, and one not yet fully plumbed. For example, ex-Canada George Williams confined all season to starts. Wait till 2014...

Adam and Iqbal, both deservedly called up, more than held their own in that promotion-cinching firsts’ win Saturday.

Saturday Sept 28th…
...with Chinar IV in need of one win for their own promotion, Wasim’s troops gave Basil Saeed’s bhais not a sniff, taking them down for 105 in reply to Glenmore’s 169. Anjandeep, shot out just when set, as Calgary’s most elderly active Umpire detected*** the faintest of edges, was magic with the ball, bagging 4 but well-deserving of a 5-fer. Of which two victims- the vaunted Parteek and Ravi, a last-minute add-on after being rained off in Vancouver’s Elite final, disappeared in consecutive overs to trickery book-ended with smiles!

Sunday the 29th…
...the Naqshbandi-led Glenmore juggernaut was more than unstoppable, even when 6-of-13-ranked KnightRiders spied an escape from the jail, converting a choked-off 96-6 into 233-8.

A false feeling of freedom. For, after appropriately watchful starts from Trevor and Adam, Anjan and Mr Sandhu added 170-odd almost chanceless runs for the 3rd wicket, one which Anjan was unlucky to lose to a direct hit from the ‘keeper.

Munching on the statutory post-game Lindt choca-block, Anjan explained it thus: “They were aiming at stumps from both ends. I thought I just had to watch for that from one end!”

Slim-man and expert chocolate-watcher Knox helped put the dismissal in perspective. “Why don’t you try eating that choc-slab from both ends? If you don’t, the Pasternak-chua** will be knawing on the other end in no time.”

It was suiting- to cap the 1st 2nd-team 3-game win streak in 4 years- that Captain Wasim, now poised to take out Anjan’s all-time wins record for any GCC II Captain, calmly finished the job with the un-moveable Iqbal. And with 41 balls to spare in the 35 over game. For the Iqster, it capped a not-out weekend of 109 runs.

Sir Iqqy, the past weekend clearly full of sleep as well as runs, may get off on the occasional Red Bull. But with Anjan marching before all, some are pushing today for Lindt Almond Chocolate to be shoved under the narco-scope.

A final note- while running out of ideas with the bat in their early top-middle collapse, KnightRiders were heard to dismiss Glenmore II’s Captain Calm as he handed himself the first-change ball- “Here comes Misbah”, But that simply confirmed this writer’s utter nouselessness in the dept. of trash-talking.

For utter respect for elders remains thankfully entrenched in many cultural groups. And when some move to our Mild West one, we are fortunate to receive the odd reminder of something lost.

*A Calgary-style leg-before-wicket dismissal. Can also be written, as in the case of Roger Maris’s Babe Ruth-beating 1961 major-league 61* home run total , simply as lbw*

** For those who’ve not yet attended the “Even You Can learn Urdu” courses now offered by Golder Associates, and led by recent convert/advocate Jono Smithy, ‘chua’ translates elegantly to ‘RAT’.

*** A Shopping Channel hearing aide system, model DRS-O*&^%, may, for the first time, have been involved in the C&DCL umpiring-decision-making process.

After calling inside 20 minutes, less time than Khurram Chohan takes to bowl an over off a run that makes Bob Willis’s look a two-step wonder, and thus paying just 3 times the full in-store price for the first aide, the Umpire reportedly forked over ½ that for the second, then was easily convinced, at no additional cost to the first, a 3rd wireless one could be fitted in an unidentified location.

Asked from where the idea for this ground-breaking technological tactic originated, the Umpire could only come up with “It was either that or get the seismic gear on. Couldn’t see this coming, especially after the sun-glasses got lost in the last ambulance ride. And I didn’t hear it was possible until the Dentist, Physio and Chiropractor all sent bills in Morse Code.
