Match report They say it’s not the winning that counts but the taking part. Well, when it’s half way through July and you’re still looking for your first victory of the season it’s time to start focusing on winning. And so it was with much relief Glenmore 1st XI secured their opening triumph of the 2011 campaign against Crown III.

Once again the players arrived at the Inland Small ground hoping for warm sunshine only to find a chilly breeze and ominous looking clouds overhead. Glenmore’s diehard scorer Heather Moran looked like she was ready for arctic conditions as she sat in Ugg boots, hoody and blanket!

Perhaps the cool weather was too much for some of the Crown players, who arrived unfashionably late. At the start of play only 8 took the field and by the end of the game just two more had made the trip to the north of the city.

With Glenmore looking for a more a robust batting performance captain and vice-captain (Bray and Storey) strode positively out to the middle to open the innings. With the pitch showing some inconsistent bounce and the new ball swinging just a little it was vital to bat responsibly. Bray took the majority of the bowling in the initial few overs and immediately looked at home, leaving the wide ones, blocking the good ones and dispatching anything at all loose to the boundary. He took a particular liking to Ali who continued to feed Bray’s favorite hook shot. Time and again he dropped short only to see the Glenmore skipper rock onto his back foot and smash the ball to the rope. At the other end Storey (15) struck a couple of nice fours off Ehsan before the bowler got the last laugh, knocking back the off stump with a useful off-cutter.

This brought the in form Burhan to the crease. The youngster never looked in any trouble and played with an immaculately straight bat, working the ball into gaps to keep the scoreboard ticking over at a healthy rate. Bray and Burhan looked set for a mammoth partnership when an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration cost Bray his wicket…caught at long on for a fine 55. But with the scoreboard reading 107-2 and with plenty of overs remaining Glenmore were confident of posting an intimidating total.

Trevor DeFreitas came and went quickly but Bobby Gajendra provided some good support to the superb Burhan, who went to fifty with a beautiful clip through midwicket for four. Bobby also showed some class with a magnificently executed straight driven boundary. The vice president looked in excellent touch and was unfortunate to be bowled for 18 by one that kept low.

It was at the stage of the innings Glenmore started to suffer an all too familiar fate. With some middle order solidity required wickets tumbled and hopes of posting a score in excess of 250 dwindled. Burham was caught in the deep for a classy 58, Ruwan departed for 13 and Santosh was out for 8 to leave Glenmore floundering and Crown very much in the ascendency. Jonathon Smith gave his teammates something to cheer with an audacious late dab down to third man for four. It was an impudent flash of brilliance from Smith, who had perfected the shot in the winter nets off the bowling of Gajendra. However, Smith was soon making his way off having been bowled next ball by Ehsan.

Parbinder Singh tried to eek out a few more precious runs but was eventually knocked over for 9 to leave Glenmore all out for a disappointing 208 from 45 overs.

During the interval Alex Robertson lifted spirits somewhat with a fine array of pastry products and an amusing tale of how he suffered a recent rib injury. But, it was soon down to business as Bray rallied his troops. Instructions were simple…bowl straight and hold onto the catches. Bobby was obviously paying attention as he took a sublime caught and bowled in just his second over. Ali had struck the ball firmly but Bobby swooped low with his right hand to claim the catch just millimeters off the ground.

With the stiff breeze aiding his in-swing Bobby was troubling all the batsmen and was soon picking up wickets for fun. Ishan went for 7, while number four Ammar somehow scraped his way to 17 before losing both his middle and leg stumps to another perfectly pitched delivery from Gajendra. At the other end Sheraz Khan bowled with great verve but without luck and was soon replaced by Parbinder, who instantly found some turn from a good length. Kamran and Ehsan both fell with the score on 67 to leave the impressive Gajendra with four wickets (4-30) and Crown looking for some inspiration.

Number 6 Shoaid may have lacked some of the fundamentals when it came to his batting technique but he more than made up for it with his exuberance, self-confidence and his chat. He slogged a few fours and a six and was quick to inform the Glenmore second slip the game would soon be over. His game was over a lot sooner than he’d have liked though thanks to a perfectly flighted delivery from Parbinder. The ball looped and dropped beautifully, Shaoid couldn’t resist attempting an almighty hoik, and was hopelessly bowled.

By then the stuffing had been knocked out of Crown and it was just a matter of time before Glenmore claimed their victory. Ruwan replaced Gajendra at the Stoney Trail end and bowled with good aggression, and deservedly picked up two wickets (2-22). The last pair showed some fight as they delayed Glenmore’s celebrations but eventually it was Parbinder (3-49) who took the final wicket as Ally was smartly stumped by Trevor for 9. Crown all out for 136.

Following a below par performance with the bat (Bray and Burhan the notable exceptions) Glenmore produced a fantastic performance with the ball. Led by Gajendra’s burst with the new ball, all the bowlers were a handful. This was backed up with some sprightly work in the field and some sharp catches being pouched. If Glenmore can maintain these standards with the ball and show some more flair with the bat then this could prove to be the first win of many in 2011.
