Glenmore Cricket Club News story

1sts Back to Winning Ways

01 Sep 2015

Another impressive bowling display saw Glenmore's 1st XI secure their first win since June 14th, giving them a chance of still making the play-offs.

Cavaliers won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat first. There was a short delay as the players waited for the umpires to arrive. They never did, and so former league President Wasim Khan did the honours. Suki Ghotra took the new ball with 1st XI debutant Farid Iqbal. Farid is the leading wicket taker for the 2nd XI this season and so fully deserved his call up to 50 over cricket. Together Suki and Farid got off to a tight start, keeping the scoring to a minimum and regularly testing out the batsmen. The Cavs batsmen Khawaja and Sharma were circumspect in their approach, never looking to take any risks. They managed to hang around until the 8th over when Farid claimed his first wicket for the 1st XI. Khawaja misjudged the length, went back when he should have been forward, and the ball wrapped him plum in front of middle stump.

15 for 1 quickly became 15 for 2 when Suki got into the action in the next over, taking a sharp caught and bowled chance to remove Sharma. At this point runs weren't coming, the ball was swinging just enough and every ball felt like getting another wicket. When the fielding team is on top in that circumstance the batsmen need a little bit of luck to survive. Sadly for Rohan Javed, luck wasn't on his side when a length delivery from Suki failed to bounce and hit him on the boot smack in front of the stumps. The only way it would have missed is if it went under! It was just reward for Suki though who again produced an excellent spell to finish with 2 for 6 from six overs.

Suki was replaced in the attack by Ali Memon. 'Lulu' has been struggling for some consistency recently but he too struck in his first over. A sharp delivery found the outside edge of Anuj Singh's blade as he attempted a cut and the ball just about stuck in Storey's gloves.

But it was Farid Iqbal who proved to be the chief destroyer with the ball, ending up with four wickets for 22 runs from 10 extremely impressive overs. Once or twice he tried testing the middle of the pitch, but on the whole Farid maintained an immaculate line and length giving nothing for the batsmen to hit. He had Umer Ahmad caught by Suki at square leg, and then Jaideep took a terrific catch in the covers to get rid of Phani Addala. Jai moved forward and to his right and then still had to dive forward to take the ball just above the long grass. Farid finished by clean bowling the dangerous Parminder with a slower ball.

Before the day started Sam Lidgerwood had figures for the 1st XI of 20-3-35-0. He had bowled beautifully in his two previous games, regularly beating the outside edge, but didn't have any wickets to show for it. It looked as though his economical but wicketless figures would continue when he started his spell with three maidens and plenty of play-and-misses. But, he finally got his name in the book when an excellent outswinger that bounced a little found the edge of Irfan Khan's bat and was taken safely by Storey. Sam later picked up the final wicket of the innings when Khaira attempted a wild slog and Suki completed the catch at cover. The only other wicket to fall went to Jaideep Singh who once again bowled a fantastic spell in the middle overs. Jai swung it more than anyone on the day, and for the second week in a row claimed a wicket when the batsman left a ball he thought was passing harmlessly down the leg side. Last week the ball swung back to remove the leg bail. This time it swung back to hit Gupta on the pad, leaving Wasim to once again nod his head. Apparently the head nod has replaced the raised finger in sending the unsuspecting batsman on his way.

Cavaliers were all out for 80 leaving Glenmore with a potentially tricky run chase. A few feeble batting efforts in recent games from Glenmore have scuppered their season somewhat, but the return of Mark Turner at the top of the order gave everyone a confidence boost. The tall Kiwi may still be struggling with his groin injury, but it certainly didn't prevent him from playing yet another match winning innings. As always Turns batted with great composure, quick to capitalise on anything fractionally off line or length, but always willing to leave or defend when required. The rest of the Glenmore players could certainly learn from his shot selection. Thanks to Turns' ability to find the gaps and reach the boundary, the scoreboard skipped along at a merry rate for Riley Park standards. The score had reached 31 when Arnav bowled a short one that didn't get up. Storey was committed to the pull shot which came off the toe of the bat and fell tamely into the hands of mid-on.

Turns and Adam Knox batted solidly together for the next eight overs and took the score past fifty. However, when Adam hit one to mid-off and set off for a quick single the throw produced a direct hit and Knoxy was adjudged run out. Adam wasn't too pleased with the decision and a few choice words were exchanged before he finally dragged himself off the field. Two balls later and Turner was on his way back to the shed too, the latest victim of the new Riley pitch. His was the worst of all. An absolute half tracker from the spin of Gupta, the ball literally rolled along the deck, hit the back foot and once again Wasim was nodding enthusiastically.

54-3 and suddenly there were a few nerves among the Glenmore players, or least in the skipper. But, Jaideep (13 not out) and Anjan decided an aggressive approach would be the best policy to get the game ended as quickly as possible. Both batsmen took the attack to the bowlers and ran well between the wickets. Anjan hit Parminder into the flower beds with a big six to take Glenmore to the brink of victory. However, there was one more lbw decision before the game was done...Anjan given out to Gupta for 10 runs. Sam came in and quickly wrapped it up with a four from his second ball.

In the end it was a comfortable win for Glenmore. Yet again the bowlers did a fantastic job to keep the pressure on the Cavs batsmen. Congratulations to Farid for his excellent display on debut, and well batted to Mark Turner for his 43 from 70 balls.

Now just two games remain for Glenmore, the next being on Monday 7th September at Riley Park.
