Glenmore Golf Day Brings in Over $500!

15 Sep 2013

Our second annual Golf Day was a great success, raising over $500 for the club. The previous week the weather had got the better of us and the event was postponed. But, following seven days of frantically trying to reorganize, we had glorious sunshine at Valley Ridge Golf Club and the 21 competitors arrived in good spirits.
Jonathan Bray is the organizing mastermind behind the golf day and we are enormously grateful to him for the work he puts in. Not only did he plan the event, but his company (Purple Valley Imports) put up over $1300 worth of prizes, which is amazingly generous.
Jon was on hand at the course entrance on Sunday, selling mulligans and squeezing as much cash out of our participants as possible. He then dashed over to the putting green for the pre-round Putting Competition. Everyone had a few attempts at knocking in a ridiculously long putt, but nobody was successful. In the end it came down to a play-off between Trev DeFreitas and Brent Hughes, and it was Mr Hughes who stuck his putt the closest.
After a quick drink, and an even quicker bite to eat, the teams headed off to their respective tee boxes for the 2pm start. Given the flood damage earlier in the summer, the course was in excellent condition, and we Glenmore members visited just about every square inch of it! There were lost balls aplenty as we hooked, sliced and shanked our way around.
Anil Joshi won the Furthest from the Pin award, using an ancient 7-iron to plonk the ball on the very front of the green. Alex Storey and Lyndsay Knox shared the spoils when it came to the Straightest Drive on hole 12. Both hit the mature 3-wood dead centre of the fairway, sacrificing distance for accuracy!
In the end, Lyndsay's team (with hubby Adam, BJ and Rebecca) finished in last place but came off the course with a look of steely determination in their eyes…watch for this foursome in next year's tournament!
The winning team was that of Jon Bray, Glenn MacDonald and Andrew Wakefield. They held off a strong challenge from the team of Tony, Brent, Anil and first-time golfer Sidhu to finish on -6.
Massive thanks to everyone who came along and donated so much cash. Apologies to those who had wanted to play the previous week and couldn't make it. Hopefully the weather will be kinder next year.
And thanks again to Jon Bray, and Anil Joshi for their kind donations.
