As the First XI were running through their warmup for what would eventually result in the club’s watershed victory, an engagement of a different kind was unfolding at the East Calgary Community Fair in Forest Lawn. Glenmore CC had been invited to spread the word on the game of cricket to the local community and they turned out in their hundreds to hear it, and to pick up some skills from Anand Gupta, Sandy Sahota, Anjan Singh, David Hope-Johnstone (after figuring how to park a Car2Go for an hour) and Hugh Evans.
East Calgary is a melting pot of cultures and these came together for the Diversity Cup football tournament, attended the booths and made their way to the baseball diamond – where three mini cricket games ran continuously over four hours. Our members were able to coach the kids, and talk them and their interested parents through some interesting facts about the game in Calgary and about our very own PeeWee cricket program. Alderman Andre Chabot also made an appearance to find out what all the fuss was about.
At the end of the day we were left with a warm feeling, partly due to sunburn, and perhaps because one of the local children was going home as a future player in the Canadian national team…..
