Inaugural Glenmore Golf Day Raises $270!

29 Jul 2012

On Sunday July 29th the cricketers of Glenmore put away their bats and pulled out their clubs for the first ever Glenmore Golf Day. It proved to be a massive success, raising a fantastic $270 for the club.
Jon Bray had masterminded the day, organizing things at the course and putting up a vast array of prizes. He got things off to a luxurious start by arranging a stretched limousine to pick up eight lucky competitors from Riley Park and take them out to Springbank Links golf club. A few glasses of bubbly on the way set the mood and the lads arrived keen to make the most of the perfect weather conditions.
After a short period of much needed practice the 16 players (a mixture of Glenmore members, new and old, and friends of the club) headed to the first tee. Rules were explained, mulligans/raffle tickets were sold and soon the event was under way.

Team Fusion got things started, led by Mr Tony Pasternak. His team consisted of Brent Hughes, Spencer Gooden and Martin Muyomba, playing golf for the first time.
Pre-match favorites Team Old Port were next out. Glenmore stalwart Trevor DeFreitas was team captain and he had a band of high caliber golfers at his disposal; Anil Joshi, Jai Manak and Mani.
Alex Robertson led Team Backyard, a motley crew comprising of Glenn MacDonald, David Sherjan and Bobby Gajendra, another golfing novice.
The last group out was Team Double Cask. Jon Bray, Andrew Wakefield, BJ Wolstenholme and captain Alex Storey making up a quartet of golfing giants!

One of idiosyncrasies of the day was the introduction of special team balls. The idea was simple...the ball must be hit from every position the team finds itself and successfully make it's way around the course. The first two teams tee'd up their multi-coloured sphere and smashed it down the 1st fairway. However, Team Backyard's captain, Mr Robertson, brought the game into disrepute when he stepped up and merely tapped the precious orb a few feet from the tee. The onlooking Team Double Cask were rightly appalled and made their feelings known. Robertson, clearly a man lacking in scruples, simply flicked his teammates a wink and marched off with a swagger.

Three teams managed to drive, chip, pull and slice their team balls around the 18 holes. Team Old Port, however, somehow managed to lose their ball in the middle of the 4th fairway, only for the following team to spot it and pop it in their pocket.

The most heart stopping moment of the day came on the 15th hole. Jon Bray, fresh from receiving some tips from Andrew Wakefield, stood over his ball on the tee box. His feet were correctly lined up. His eyes moved up from the ball and focused intently on his target. His breathing slowed. He was ready. The club came back in an almighty arc and wallop!!! However, the ball was sadly not booming down the middle of the fairway. Instead it was heading, rapidly, in the direction of a cricketing cow-corner...a big pull arrowing toward some rather lovely houses. CRACK!!! The sound of the ball smashing into the balcony of an unsuspecting home echoed around the course. For a moment there were concerns the balcony may collapse but thankfully there was no damage. The home owners were quickly out to have a look...Mr Bray made sure he avoided eye contact with them and hopped into his cart to make a swift retreat from the scene of the crime!

Following a fantastic afternoon in the sunshine the players retired to the clubhouse for a mountain of pizza and the much anticipated prize giving. And so, to the winners and losers. Sadly, the losers were Team Double Cask, with a final score of 2 under par. The bag of goodies each member received did go some way to dull the pain of disappointment.

The event victors were Team Old Port, who put in a magnificent display to card a -6. Tony and Robbo's team's each finished on a most creditable minus 5.

The longest putt prize was split between Glenn MacDonald and Brent Hughes following some on course confusion. Brent drained the longest putt on the 12th hole, while G-Mac made the longest on the 18th.
Jai Manak was the deserving winner of the closest to the pin prize, putting his approach shot within four feet on the par 3 5th. Andrew Wakefield took home the longest drive prize thanks to a big, booming effort on the 17th, which also benefited from a useful bounce on the cart path!
The raffle was won by Trevor, who looked pleased as punch to receive a brand new Ogio golf bag. The raffle was well supported on the day (clearly the mulligans were a good selling point) and eventually raised $270 for the club. Hopefully this money will go toward the purchase of a new, mobile batting net, which would be a great addition for Glenmore.

Thanks again to Jon Bray for all his efforts and generosity, and to all those who took part in the day. The club needs it's members to support events like this and so everyone's involvement is much appreciated. Here's to another fun day on the golf course next summer.
