Weekly Club Update - Friday 12th August

12 Aug 2022

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came along to Riley Park last Saturday for our club BBQ. It was a beautiful day at the famous old ground and we had lots of members attend with their families which was great to see. The hero of the hour was Quinton North who put in a herculean effort to organise the event and spent the afternoon juggling three grills. We all thank Quinton for his hard work.

A massive thank you also to AA Sports, Kinetic Sports, Born Brewing Co and Cover Drive Cricket Simulator for providing us some terrific prizes for our raffle. AA Sports and Kinetic Sports donated bats, with Debo Sen and Dan Paul the lucky winners. Quinton took home a Born Brewing Co goody bag, while James Neale and Kyle Salzman will have the opportunity to get along to Cover Drive to face Ravi Ashwin and Ishant Sharma.

SATURDAY WAS AN ALL ROUND success for the club with the 2nd XI cruising to another comprehensive win. An early 8am start was no issue for Ameer's men as they made short work of New West Warriors.  All the bowlers performed well, keeping the New West batters under constant pressure and taking wickets at regular intervals. There were two wickets apiece for Ameer Hamza, Shadman Sakib, Rinat Haque and Saad Khan.

A target of 105 was never likely to prove much of a challenge for a powerful batting order, and so it proved with the 2nds running out winners by 8 wickets. All the batsmen made it into the 20s with Usama Saeed top scoring with 27. Wasim Naqshbandi chipped in with 20, while Shadman and Adil Amin remained unbeaten on 23 and 20 respectively. Congratulations to the 2nd XI, who continue to sit top of the table.

Shadman Sakib receives his Man of the Match award.

MONDAY EVENING SAW both the Royals and the Blues play their final league games of the season. Both teams performed fantastically well to record wins, with the Royals upsetting one of the strongest teams in the league, Gujarat Lions.

The Royals batted first and put up one of their strongest batting displays of the season in making 170-6. Usama Saeed (32* off 15 balls) got the innings off to a strong start with PJ Deol (17), putting on 44 in just 3.4 overs. Gurvinder Ahuja has returned to the club this year and has proved to be a very consistent performer for the Royals. He continued his fine form with a run a ball 33* to keep the momentum going. A strong finish to the innings came thanks to some hard hitting from David Hazell (24* off 15) and Sajid Hasan (17 off 7).

It was the Royals fielding that did the business at the start of the Gujarat Lions innings, with the first two wickets falling to sharp run outs. Three Gajarat batters made it to 30 not out in quick time, but their efforts were scuppered as the Royals bowlers maintained their discipline and kept taking wickets. Emaad Hasan (1 for 22) and Dan Miekle (0 for 23) were particularly economical from their 4 overs, while Sajid (2 for 38) and David (1 for 31) picked up vital wickets in the second half of the innings. In the end Gujarat Lions finished on 155 to give the Royals their best win of the season.

Huge congrats to Theunis van der Linde and his squad on an excellent season. They finished 6th with a record of 4 wins from 9 games. They were always competitive in the games they lost and were unfortunate to have some games washed out against the lower sides.

THE BLUES ALSO FINISHED their season strongly with a fine all round display against Gujarat XI. The Blues bowled first and after an expensive opening over from Trent Dunlop they were right on the money. Hari Venkat was at his miserly best with the new ball, going for just 12 from his 4 overs. He also picked up the all important wicket of Dipen Patel, lbw for just 1 run. Trent didn't take long to get into the swing of things, cleaning up Hitesh Naik with a beauty and removing opener Shaikh to finish with figures of 4-0-22-2.

Ryan Jenkinson sent down three entertaining overs, making the batters duck and weave out of the way numerous times. Haley Gorman out foxed Khushal Shukla, bowling him with a beautifully flighted delivery. Debo Sen also chipped in with a late wicket as Gujarat limped to 116 from their 20 overs.

Jason Funnell and Chris Owens opened the batting for the Blues and put on a calm, controlled 51 run partnership to ease any nerves. Jason twice cleared the boundary with some pure hitting before falling for an excellent 25. The relaxed batting continued with Debo sauntered to the middle and knocked it around without concern. A series of textbook drives kept the scoreboard ticking over. Chris was out for an impressive 29, allowing Damian Britt to come in and finish the game in style with a fluent 17*. Debo took the Player of the Match award thanks to his 29 not out.

The Blues won by 8 wickets to leave them 5th in the league, their highest league position ever. Congratulations to Reece and his squad on a superb season.
