Weekly Club Update - July 8th 2022

08 Jul 2022

OUR 1ST XI CELEBRATED a fantastic win on the long weekend thanks to a superb bowling display. Ahmaddiya were the opponents at Westwinds, but it was Glenmore that batted first. As has often happened this season, a number of the top order made starts but none were able to kick on to make a big score. Anjan Singh continued his good form with a patient 35. Adil Amin (20) and Sukhvir Munday (24) also chipped in with a few, but a final total of 155 all out felt well below par.

Thankfully, the Glenmore attack produced a fabulous display to knock Ahmaddiya over for a paltry 97. Opening batsman Anas Khan made 29 but nobody else made it to double figures. Lakha Singh (2-14) and Mohammad Sherzai (2-16) bowled beautifully, but the chief destroyer was Vaibhav Rai with his slow left arm. Vai joined the club during the Winter and he showed his class with the ball with figures of 10 overs, 4 maidens, 4 for 17. A brilliant match winning display.

The 1sts also had a win on Sunday, but in rather strange circumstances. The match was awarded to Anjan's men when the opposition failed to show up!

IN THE 35 OVER DIVISION our 2nd XI continued their wonderful form with a comprehensive victory over New West on Sunday. Our opening pair failed to deliver but a strong showing from the middle order ensured a decent total was posted. Salman Akhtar again looked good in making a useful 45. Saad Khan has been in top form in recent weeks, and he yet again passed fifty in quick time, notching up 53 from just 29 balls. A late cameo from Ahsan Javaid (27 off 28) took the score to a challenging 216.

As with the 1st XI game described earlier, only one member of the New West batting order managed to get into double figures as the Glenmore bowlers turned the screw from ball one. As often happens, Ameer Hamza got things rolling with an early wicket. It was the cunning leg spin of Dan Paul that did the trick after that, as the talented Aussie picked up 4 wickets for just 18 runs. Kamran Chaudhry wrapped things up with 2 wickets for 3 runs, ending the innings for just 82.

The 2nds now sit proudly atop the league table with 4 wins our of 4.

UNFORTUNATELY THE RAIN prevented the Glenmore Blues from registering an easy victory on Monday evening in the Weeknight league. An extraordinary performance with the ball saw them bowl out Cubs for just 50 at Riley Park. Another strange looking scorecard saw the Cubs opener Muhammad Ibahim make 27, and then the next top score was just 4! Damian Britt and Steven Schunker were the superstars with the ball, pretty much putting a complete halt to scoring and picking up wickets with alarming frequency. Damian finished with 4-3-3-3! And club legend Steve Schunker was even better with 2-0-2-4! An amazing display and one that really deserved a win. However, with the Blues innings at 14-1 the rain came and the umpire abandoned the match.

The rain also stopped the Royals game against Gujarat XI prematurely, but at least enough overs had been bowled to allow a result. And that result was a comfortable win for the Royals. Another strong showing with the bat saw them rack up a sizeable total of 165-7 from their 20 overs. Usama Saeed got things off to a fast start with a 32* from just 17 balls. The innings was given an equally impressive conclusion when Jawwad Qureshi came in at number 10 and smoked 25* from 14 balls! In between times there were good contributions from Fahad Nayyar (20), Gurvinder Ahuja (22) and PJ Deol (13*).

With bad weather around and the chances of getting a full innings looking unlikely, captain Theunis opted to open the bowling with spin to get through as many overs as quickly as possible. Usama had no trouble with the new pink ball and picked up two wickets in his 4 overs. Gurvinder also took 2 poles to mean Gujarat were way behind the run rate. They managed to get through 9.3 overs before the rain smashed down and the game was called off. With the score on 50-4 it meant the Royals had won by 31 runs (D/L).

BY NOW YOU WOULD HAVE RECEIVED all the details regarding our club BBQ (Aug 6th), Club Golf Day (Sept 3rd) and our Summer junior program. Do please reply to those emails as required and try to get involved in those events. We are particularly keen to get as many members and their families along to the club BBQ, so please put it in your diary.

FINALLY, MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO Reece Matthews for another stellar performance for the Calgary Colts team this week. The Colts play in the T20 league and Reece is proving to be the stand out player. On Thursday he got a run out, bowled 4 overs and took 2 for 14, and then made 52 opening the batting. A superb effort from the young man.

Good luck to all our teams this weekend and have a fun filled Stampede everyone.
