Interview with Glenmore Royals Skipper, Ken Beaumont

24 May 2016

Alex Storey: First of all, congratulations on being elected as skipper of the Royals this year. How are you looking forward to leading the team this Summer?

Ken Beaumont: I am very much looking forward to leading the Royals this year with all the new faces in the line up.  I am somewhat nervous, wanting to do the best job possible, however, have every confidence in my two new Vice Captains helping me out, Rajeev and Neil.

AS: How would you describe your squad and what are your expectations for how the team will do?

KB: I'm lucky to be leading such an excellent squad and I can't wait to get to know all the new guys much better over the season.  I know we will have fun and I'm confident we will be competitive.

AS: What will the biggest challenges be do you think, both for you as captain and the team as a whole?

KB: Biggest challenge?....apart from umpiring and the grass at Riley?...I hope the biggest challenge is in deciding who has to sit out games as it would be great to have most squad members available for all the games.

AS: Any new members of the Royals squad you're particularly excited about and you think will have a big impact?

KB: We have quite a few new faces and I've only seen some of them a few times so hard to pick any one out at this early stage.

AS: Are you looking forward to the games against Matt's Blues and Iain's Taverners?

KB: The inter-club games are definitely going to be a highlight again this season and we now have 2 to look forward to!  I'm sure there will be plenty of friendly banter going on in the build up to those games and that they will be played in the usual great Glenmore spirit.  The Tavs are the team we'd most like to beat, so I'm putting up a prize for anyone getting any of the following out for a low (less than 10) score: Iain, Wayne, BJ......and I might add a few more names to the list as the season progresses.

AS: Any other teams in the Weeknight league you think will be tough opponents?

KB: There are usually a few teams that take the weeknight league very seriously, sometimes too seriously.  We will just play each game as it comes and just looking forward to getting out, enjoying ourselves and playing some good cricket in the proper spirit of the game.

AS: Will you be employing a Fines Committee this year? i hear Neil did a grand job last season.

KB: We are very lucky to have snagged Mr Fines himself from the Tavs so, yes, that will definitely be continued this season as it adds a little extra humour and edge to each game.  I think I'll just pay the maximum now and get it over with!

AS: Will there be a strong social aspect to the Royals this year? Where can we expect to find you post-match?

KB: I know a few of the squad members are always up for a post match drink and game dissection so wherever we are playing, there will be an open invitation to join us at the local hostelry.

AS: The opposition need one run to win and you need one wicket. The ball gets hit high into the sky...which Royal do you want under it? And who do want nowhere near it?

KB: ....do I really need to answer that question?....kiss of death what I'm about to say...I'd be happy to take that opportunity myself...and I'm not going to name anyone else on the squad..being the positive Captain, I know all my players will perform admirably in the field.

 AS: Anything else to add?

KB: I hope the weather is good to us, the umpires are fair and that we take away lots of great memories from the first season with 3 weeknight teams and continue to grow as the best club in Calgary.
