Glenmore Cricket Club News story

Weekly Club Update - Thursday 14th July

15 Jul 2022

PLEASE REMEMBER TO RSVP TO the club BBQ invitation you have received. It's important we know how many people to expect so do let us know how many you are bringing and if you have any special dietary requirements. The BBQ should be a great event, and we will have some terrific prizes for the fundraising raffle, including passes to Cover Drive; the new indoor cricket simulator at Sunridge Mall.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR volunteers to help us on Sunday 21st August when we will be participating in the All Sport One Day event. We have taken part in this Sport Calgary event many times before and it's always a fun day, and a great way to introduce kids to cricket. We will be at Glenmore Athletic Park from 12pm - 5pm so will need at least four coaches to help run the sessions. We would likely split the time in half so some coaches do the first few hours and some do the last few hours.

If you are willing and able to volunteer please let us know.

SUMMER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED so why not spend this Friday evening soaking up the sunshine at Riley Park for another all Glenmore contest. It's Glenmore Royals versus Glenmore Taverners and the action starts at 6pm. Come on down and cheer on the teams.

The Taverners are coming off the back of a fine win last Friday against JCC. It was a memorable game for a few reasons. Marcus Levermore signed off with a fluent 30* from 24 balls, including two sumptuous lofted drives for 6. Marcus is heading off to Saudi shortly so may have played his last game for the club. We thank him for being a great club member and wish him well. Matt Chilvers was also playing some magnificent cricket on Friday, smashing a quickfire 32* from just 17 balls. Matt and Marcus had got the innings off to a terrific start but a series of quick wickets left the innings in the balance with 10 overs still remaining. A handy partnership between Reece Matthews (19) and Alex Storey (30*) meant the Tavs got up to 132 from their 20 overs.

The JCC run chase got off to a quick start with opener Gujale and number 3 Kundra both heloing themselves to 30s retired. Together they put JCC in a commanding position, partly thanks to Taverners dropping a series of catches. Things got worse for the Tavs when Bijju Mohankumar had the webbing on his hand cut as he attempted a caught and bowled. Bijju headed off to hospital, waited almost 10 hours, got 8 stitches and went home.

Bijju's departure and a controversial not out decision from the square leg umpire seemed to galvanise the Tavs. Suddenly the bowlers had a little more spring in their step and the fielding improved dramatically. Reece Matthews and Freddy Bhathena both returned to the attack late in the innings and picked up crucial wickets. Marcus took two sensational catches at long on, and when Tarun Jain had Kanwar Singh caught at mid wicket by Dan Paul it was all over. JCC fell 8 runs short.

MEANWHILE, AT INLAND LARGE, the Glenmore Blues had a frustrating game against New West Bisons. The Blues were bowled out for 106, but it should and would have been many more had it not been for two shocking LBW decisions that sent Jason Funnell (26) and Damian Britt (0) back the sidelines in quick succession. That really knocked the stuffing out of the Blues innings, but thankfully swashbuckling display with the willow from Kyle Salzmann (30* off 19) took the score above a hundred.

The Blues then flew out of the traps with the ball, destroying the Bisons top order to leave them 4 wickets down with just 6 on the board! Kyle (2-19) and Hari Venkat (2-21) did the damage early on to put the game back in the balance. Had a big appeal for LBW gone the Blues way shortly afterwards they may well have been on track for a win, but sadly the umpire decided to keep his finger in his pocket this time. Sholapur made a valuable unbeaten 30 and the lower middle order all made good contributions to take the Bisons to their target with 3 overs and 4 wickets in hand.

THE GLENMORE ROYALS WERE in action on Monday evening against top of the table Panthers. As they have done all season, the Royals put in another solid performance but weren't quite able to get the job done. With the ball they did extremely well to keep Panthers to 142 all out. Raman Dhillon continued his fine form with the new ball, taking 2 for 23. Skipper Theunis van der Linde used his flight and guile to pick up 2 for 20. And all the other bowlers did well and picked up a wicket each.

Usama Saeed has been in terrific touch with bat recently and he continued his good form with a superb 30* from 18 balls at the top of the order. Unfortunately he was the only one to make it to the magic mark of 30. Wasim Naqshbandi (19), Theunis (16) and Sajid Hasan (18) all batted well but the regular fall of wickets kept Royals behind the rate, and they were eventually all out for 123.

A MAGNIFICENT BOWLING DISPLAY FROM Suki Ghotra and Navi Parmar almost gave the 1st XI a famous win over Kings XI at the weekend. The two quicks bowled in tandem for 14 overs, sharing the 7 wickets to fall and giving Kings an almighty scare. Suki completed his 10 overs and took 4 for 49. An excellent effort from the attack leader and the senior bowler. Navi has had an amazing season so far and his rapid improvement continued as he took 3 for 21 from 7 overs. Alas, their herculean efforts weren't quite enough. Had the batters managed to score another 30 runs things may well have been different. As it was, the 1sts batting never really got going. Anjan Singh (26) and Lakha Singh (10) were the only two to make it into double figures as the team got bowled out for just 91.

THE 2ND XI ONLY MADE 62 WITH THE BAT against Spartans but that was enough to secure a 10 wicket victory to cement their place at the top of the 35 over division. Abdur Rahman Khan (36*) and Dan Paul (21*) knocked off the runs in relaxed fashion, but it was the bowlers who were the stars earlier in the day. Ameer Hamza had yet another great spell with the new ball, this time taking 3 for 8 from 6 overs.  Ameer now has 16 wickets (9 more than the next best) in the division this season, at an average of just 5.69! But it was Rinat Haque (pictured below) who took the Man of the Match of the awards thanks to a beautiful spell of leg spin bowling that left Spartans innings in tatters. Rinat works harder than most at his game and he thoroughly deserved the excellent figures of 6.3-0-18-4.

See the match scorecard here.

Good luck to everyone playing this weekend. Enjoy the heat!
