Glenmore I vs Crescent Stars - 23/08/10

23 Aug 2010

Well the day had to come Glenmore I finally put up some points in the weekend first division competition on Saturday with 136 run over top of the league Crescent Stars.

Bray finally won the toss and batted first. The extra bouncy new Westwinds pitch claimed a wicket with the second ball of the innings sending Jonathan back to the sidelines for a globe. Any hope of building something in the top order was destroyed with a great spell of bowling from Atiq who took 4/18 from his 10 overs. Ruwan fell cheaply and then Waseem got a beauty that cleaned him up first ball. Things were looking decidedly dodgy at 3/14. Jason was playing well with Jaspreet until the extra bounce again undid his good work (26). Jaspreet hit some beautiful shots as he made full use of the magnanimous gifts from Crescent Stars who dropped him 7 times on his way to 71. Jasdeeps partnership with Anjan (41) of 100+ runs built the platform for a competitive total. Westwinds is a large ground and the outfield is thicker than Riley so anything above 200 was always the goal. With Jas and Anjan falling in the same over a collapse ould have left Glenmore a little short but the tail chipped in to push the score up to 236 with Nadeem showing some unexpected aggression hitting a couple of maximums on his way to 26. Maconald was robbed again left stranded on 4 not out.

Crescent Stars started in the worst possible way doing one better than Glenmore by losing their first wicket off the very first ball of the innings to a swinging delivery from Ruwan taken easily by Burhan behind the stumps. Burhan went on to take 3 catches and really kept well.

Due to the munchies and a late arrival back to the ground by Jas and Manpreet Nadeem got a chance to grab the new ball. Posting his best figures of 6/42 Nadeem set about destroying the Crescent Stars batting removing the other openers stumps with a beautiful inswinger. The only resistance from Crescent Stars was Atiq and Noman who put on a 50 run partnership. It was almost broken by Manpreet when an inside edge bobbed up off the Noman's pad and Bray dived forward from short leg and put down a difficult chance. Atiq eventually skied a cut shot off Nadeem to Waseem and then shortly after Nadeem threw himself sideways and stuck a one handed return catch to send Noman walking. It was an inspired spell from Nadeem who had a golden day.

With Crescent Stars really behind on run rate and little to come in the batting Glenmore threw in one more piece of pressure throwing the ball to Glenn MacDonald to bowl one over before taking drinks. Sure enough Crescent stars obliged by spooning a catch to Manpreet at mid-off. Glenmore headed for a well deserved break with 8 wickets in the bag and virtually no chance for Crescent Stars to get back into the game.

Manpreet cleaned up the remaining two wickets easily as the last 5 batsmen could only manage 4 runs between them with Zarar not out on 3.

I would like to add that I really enjoyed the team spirit and enthusiasm shown by the whole team. The level of energy in the field never wavered and there were only a couple of missed chances. Everyone pulled together to make this a memorable game.
