Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves v Predators on Sun 26 Apr 2015 at 12pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Won by 86 runs

Match report The last ball of Glenmore's innings scorched across the outfield back past the bowler for four. It took the total to a massive 364, and took debutant Mark Turner to a magnificent unbeaten 182. It was a truly sensational way to start the season, and a few hours later Reagan Nel knocked out middle stump to wrap a comprehensive win for the Glenmore 1st XI.

Mark's knock was flawless from start to finish. Rock solid in defense, clinical in attack. His placement was impeccable, regularly piercing the gaps to send the ball across the fast outfield to the rope. It was a perfectly timed innings as Mark gained confidence and intensity with each passing over. The bat kept coming down dead straight, and the fours kept flowing. The crunching straight drive that closed the innings was his 27th four, and there were two big sixes thrown in for good measure too. 182 not out from 156 deliveries...the biggest individual score in Glenmore's history and surely the finest debut performance too.

While Mark Turner certainly took the plaudits for his hundred, there were some other very useful contributions in the Glenmore batting order. Alex Storey made 34 at the top of the order as he and Turner put on 84 for the first wicket. This was a perfect foundation for the innings, but the introduction of spin caused something of a collapse as Glenmore found themselves 138-4. What followed were four excellent partnerships that kept things moving forward. Adam Knox looked in excellent touch during his 25, and was a little unlucky to somehow kick the ball back onto his stumps. Knoxy and Mark put on 63 to get the innings back on track. Ryan Jenkinson (15) and Reagan Nel (8) also did well to put on 29 and 40 with Mark respectively.

It was the introduction on Manjinder Sandhu at 9 that really set things alight. Given instructions of looking for singles and giving Mark the strike, Manjinder decided to have more fun than that! He sent his first two balls soaring over long-on for 6! Four more boundaries followed as he raced to a very impressive 42 not out from just 19 balls. It was a super knock, and just what was needed. Manji and Mark put on 96 in just 8 overs!

Needing more than 7 runs per over it was clear Predators would need to put their foot down from the start, which shows how well Manjinder bowled the opening over. It was a maiden and could well have had a couple of wickets. Manji continued to bowl well in his opening spell but remained wicketless. Ali Memon and Reagan tried hard but couldn't find the consistency that was required. So by the time the ball was thrown to Suki Ghotra (also on debut) Preds had reached a solid looking 73-0 from 12 overs. Rosey was looking dangerous on 46, but Suki produced a beautiful yorker to claim his first wicket for the club, and give his team a much needed breakthrough.

Suki continued to bowl straight and full throughout his fantastic spell. Three times he beat the defenses of the Preds batsmen to knock back the stumps. He ended with 3 for 39 from 10 overs. To have such a thrifty economy rate on such a fast scoring ground tells you everything about Suki's consistency.

Recently married Iqbal Sandhu enjoyed plenty of action too. He had Akash Brar caught behind in his first over. He later took a skier off the bowling of Ali Memon at long-on. And between times produced an electric piece of fielding to run out Dhillon. The ball had been flicked firmly to the leg side. Ram Swaminthan dived full stretch to get a finger to the ball which sent it right into the path of Iqbal. The big man swifty swooped, picked up and unleashed a rocket throw into Storey who whipped off the bails. It was a champagne piece of cricket.

Two of the Abbas brothers (Farukh 75 and Nasir 55) played well to take the Preds innings into the final few overs, but they were never in the hunt to chase down such a big target. Manji (1-59), Ali (3-73) and Reagan (1-57) all came back well in the latter stages to finish things off, bowling Preds out for 278. Keeping them below 300 on that field was an excellent effort, and proves how well the Glenmore fielders performed.

It was a superb team effort to get the season off to a winning start. Huge congratulations to Mark Turner on his wonderful innings, and to Suki Ghotra for his terrific bowling. Perhaps best of all was seeing the team enjoying themselves and beginning to gel. Let's keep working hard and having fun, and it should be a good Summer.

Oh, and thanks to everyone who came along to support the boys...it's very much appreciated.
